Summary: The purpose of this position is to participate in management of emergency and specialty practice and primary care satellite hospitals. Whereby the practice managers are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations related to the function of hospital, the Director of Strategic Development is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the hospitals, ensuring compliance relating to the practice of veterinary medicine, upholding the hospital’s standards of care, adherence to the mission statement/ core values of each hospital, and ensuring financial stability and growth.
The Director of Strategic Development is also responsible for helping the practice managers set and achieve goals related to financial metrics and growth as well as fostering a healthy work environment where quality medicine is practiced and excellent customer service delivered. The Director of Strategic Development will play a role in helping each hospital fulfill this mission and vision as well as helping to create direction for each practice.
Management of Hospitals:
Develop and implement budget for practice manager and work with practice manager to maintain budget
Develop and assist practice manager in achieving goals—develop goals, metrics for measuring goals, and incentives for achieving goals within each location
Assist in the formulation of objectives and policies to ensure efficient and profitable operations.
Participate in the strategic growth planning of each hospital.
Periodically audit client satisfaction surveys, medical records to ensure compliance with recommendations, protocols, and finances
Evaluate need and hiring of new team members for Strategic Development Management Team as needed for successful management of hospitals. i.e. HR, IT, Medical Director, other.
Function as a liaison between the staff at various hospitals and encourage satellite staff to participate in and take advantage of CE offerings, team building, and work to improve communication and collaboration between the hospitals
Develop and implement budgets, goals, and objectives for Department Heads, Doctors, and Department Lead Technicians.
Assist in the formulation of global objectives and policies to ensure efficient and profitable operations.
Participate in the strategic growth planning of the hospital.
Directly supervises by overseeing the Lead Nurse and Practice Manager, providing employment reviews, helping to set employee professional goals, and corrective action when needed.
Works in conjunction with the Lead Nurse and Practice Manager to oversee all other team members and indirectly participates in the recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training of doctors and team members.
Coordinate and oversee onboarding and mentoring of new management members
Coordinate regular management meetings
Provides leadership through promotion of group consensus determination and by facilitating conflict resolution as necessary.
Demonstrates initiative and self motivation to follow through on all responsibilities in a timely manner.
Foster communication and collaboration among team members
Makes sure individual practice management feels valuable and a part of decisions.
Capable of championing change and driving innovative programs in the hospitals.
Monitors client service, marketing, and growth initiatives
In partnership with the Practice Managers, continually looks for ways to innovate operational practices that improve the growth of the practice.
Supports and encourages staff participation in marketing and promotional events and programs.
Develops and implements initiatives to improve bottlenecks and areas of opportunity at the hospitals such as wait time, efficiencies, and client experiences of outpatients
Provide input to the owner for growth initiatives and marketing directives
Assists with new employee acquisition strategies and cross practice relationships to promote adequate staffing and role success.
Purchasing/Inventory Maintenance, Pharmaceuticals and Vendors:
Assist Inventory Manager in deciding on medications to be stocked and the appropriate amounts with the goal of meeting the needs of the staff to provide the highest quality care as it pertains to the hospital/department.
Analyze cross practice transfer of products to limit expiration and loss when possible.
Facility and Equipment:
Develop budget for new equipment as well as repair/maintenance of existing equipment for each satellite hospital.
Maintain a comprehensive contact list for reps, vendors, and troubleshooting resources.
Staff Management - Professional Staff and Support Staff:
Provide input on the doctor and technician schedules to maximize revenue generation while minimizing expenses
Mentor and work with leadership staff to ensure an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect.
Assist Practice Manager in evaluating staffing needs and providing formal and informal input in staff evaluations.
Aid in the recruiting of new doctors and staff to the practice as well as help to determine timeline for ideal new team member acquisition.
Delegate responsibility and following up, so as to promote result oriented goals and to ensure success of achieving goals.
Assist staff where necessary and foster an educational environment
Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is based on experience and skill level. Full-time benefits include health, dental, and vision insurances; CE allowance, employee rewards program, 401k; paid time off; uniforms; and discounted veterinary care.
Work a full time schedule of 40 hours per week plus additional time periodically as needed to achieve objectives and act as a generally available resource to practice managers.
Experience, Skills and Education:
Previous veterinary management experience or experience within industry.
Able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, to a diverse range of audiences and settings.
Ability to assist in healthy conflict resolution at each practice by building close relationships with hospital management.
Physical Requirements: This job is physically active and requires frequent bending and standing for long periods of time. It requires routine lifting and restraining animals. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs regularly.
