Compassion in World Farming International was founded in 1967 in England by a British farmer who became horrified by the development of intensive factory farming. Over 50 years ago he decided to make a difference and take a stand against this farming system. In his lifetime, Peter Roberts saw the demise of veal crates and gestation crates in the UK, and in Europe achieved recognition that animals are sentient beings.
Compassion in World Farming US was started in 2012 and since then campaigns peacefully to end all factory farming practices in the US envisioning a world where farmed animals are treated with compassion and respect. Compassion in World Farming US advocates on behalf of all areas that are detrimentally impacted by factory farming, including: animals, the environment, public health, and community and workers’ justice.
The debate about food security, sustainability and safety has never been more urgent. Whilst veganism and flexitarianism are rising trends – animal welfare on factory farms worldwide is a desolate reflection on our society. As the needs of our programmes grow, we need to work with more people and institutions across the globe to enable the success of our programmes. And consequently, we are looking for a Director of Development - Major Giving and Philanthropic Partnerships (USA) in the US to play a vital role in the future funding of Compassion in World Farming US.
The US office has been very successful in securing income growth – and is investing in a new team to sustain and build on this momentum. The Director of Development - Major Giving and Philanthropic Partnerships (USA) is a new leadership role for Compassion in World Farming. We are looking for an experienced, talented, dynamic and personable fundraiser with stellar listening skills and a proven track record of closing large (six and seven-figure) gifts. As a highly motivated self-starter you are responsible for developing the major gifts program in the USA, personally securing gifts and growing income, and building a sustainable pipeline of highly committed donors able to make these transformational gifts to support our growing global fundraising program and mission to end factory farming.
Reporting into our Global Director of Fundraising (based in the UK) (GDF), and working in close collaboration with the US Executive Director (USED) and as part of the US Leadership Team, with fundraising colleagues and our Campaigns and Food Business program teams, you will manage the new Philanthropy and Partnerships Manager (USA), Individual Giving Manager (with direction from the Global Director of IG) and the Individual Giving Coordinator (Supporter Relations) and will work as part of a dynamic and ambitious global fundraising team which is responsible for significant growth from international philanthropic partners.
This role is responsible for leading the growth of our US fundraising program by developing and implementing fundraising strategies that will support the global and US philanthropic goals. You will personally lead the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of US donors at a high level and the portfolio will consist of Individual Donors, Trusts and Foundations and Institutional sources.
Key Criteria of Success
After 12 months in post, the successful candidate will have:
Gained an understanding of the full range of Compassion’s main activities and be a confident and trusted representative of Compassion in the US.
Established credibility with senior staff across Compassion through the development of strong professional relationships.
In conjunction with the Global Director of Fundraising and US Executive Director, will have developed, communicated and begun to implement a strategy to grow major gifts from individual, foundation and institutional donors in the US; this will include agreed income targets, expenditure budgets, and key performance indicators.
Working closely with the Global Director of Individual Giving (UK-based) and the IG Manager (US), have established a growth model for individual giving as part of the US and global fundraising program.
Ensured excellent stewardship of all existing donors.
Personally, initiated major gifts (e.g. $100k+), which will be finalised within the first 12 months of start date to achieve first year targets and built a strong pipeline of prospects.
Have established robust and integrated fundraising processes, KPIs and reporting.
Successfully manage the team to agreed performance targets.
Responsible for delivery of US fundraising target from US donors for the global and the US programs, working closely with the GDF and USED.
Personally champion, steward, solicit and secure substantial philanthropic gifts at a high level (6 & 7-figure+).
Systemically plan and drive income from this program through effectively and efficiently building the prospect pipeline, cultivation, and stewardship strategies.
Initiate, develop and coordinate delivery of proposals that support global program fundraising priorities based on Compassion’s strategic plan and priority major initiatives.
Deliver compelling and timely stewardship requirements to donors to optimize donor retention and renewals.
Actively suggest courses of actions such as communications, meetings, events and next steps to the USED and GDF.
Prepare accurate and timely reports to the GDF on targets, projections, progress and income.
Plan for and secure future income by developing and maintaining the annual new pledges and income pipelines.
Set and achieve agreed goals and metrics related to donor visits, solicitations, gifts and pledges closed and other critical KPIs.
Develop and implement donor cultivation and solicitation plans by focusing on establishing a portfolio of approximately 75-100 highly rated individuals and organizations with the capacity to make six to seven figure gifts.
Build long-term relationships with prospects, travelling to meet with them face-to-face and establishing an understanding of their needs and motivations in order to engage them in delivering restricted and unrestricted donations.
Regularly evaluate the prospect pool identified through a range of sources including research, personal contacts, volunteers, and trustees.
Develop compelling cases for support appropriate to new and broad audiences of donors.
Manage and support the Fundraising Team to deliver their targets and support the goals of US and global fundraising.
Apply best practice, including legal compliance, data management, volunteer support, risk management, financial/HR policies and procedures and compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements
Update and maintain Salesforce database in a timely manner to record substantive donor interactions and strategy plans.
Travel at short notice and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
Bachelor’s degree or significant equivalent experience required.
Minimum 7-years professional work experience in a Major Giving leadership role in not-for-profit organisation.
Proven success of relationship building, personal stewardship and successfully raising $500k+ philanthropic gifts ($1m+ level desirable), with already established appropriate relationships and networks.
Experience in building powerful relationships with a range of stakeholders internally and externally.
Experience of working strategically to plan for the medium and long term, as well as on a day-to-day basis, and of managing other fundraisers.
Fundraising experience within an international animal welfare, environmental or conservation context is desirable.
Proven experience and success in managing people in an ambitious fundraising environment.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

Proven track record in successful strategic development and implementation of Major Giving growth strategies.
Clear and strategic thinker – developing the US program strategically with global focus, measurable plans and progress, ensuring accountability both to our donors as well as internally.
Exceptional interpersonal communication and negotiating skills and the ability to write persuasively and effectively for varied audiences.
You are entrepreneurial, creative, have gravitas, positive, intellectually astute, confident and innovative about identifying and securing gifts at the highest levels.
Excellent presentation skills – engaging a wide range of audiences and culturally sensitive.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within an international team environment.
Budget management experience and attention to detail.
Experience using databases required, technology expertise is important.
Significant national and some international travel will be required.
Our international headquarters are in Godalming, Surrey, UK. You will be home based, preferably is an appropriate location for US major gifts fundraising e.g. New York City, LA, etc. Successful candidates must be available to occasionally work evenings and weekends as required to meet objectives, donor and events requirements, and maintain a domestic and international travel schedule, including occasional travel to headquarters.
