Genome Sciences has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Software App Developer at the Brotman-Baty Institute (BBI) to work on an open-source research platform enabling contact tracing support.
The Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine (BBI) is a recently launched, joint venture of the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital, made possible by a $50 million gift from the Brotman and Baty Families. The Brotman Baty Institute offers a dynamic work environment with cutting-edge science and computational resources.
Position Complexities: The project, named CommonCircle, is a collaboration of groups at BBI, the University of Washington Computer Science Department and volunteers. CommonCircle is a pair of companion apps that seek to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the community, specifically by helping people learn if they may have been exposed, connecting them to the appropriate public health guidance, and by enabling more efficient contact tracing. CommonCircle reduces the burden on public health systems by offering people who have been positively diagnosed and their potential exposures, a safe, private, and fast way to communicate this information to the people who need I t — public health authorities and their contact tracing teams. The two apps are separated by necessity in order to ensure that re-identification if individuals and their health status is not possible through combining Bluetooth proximity exposure notification data with the data critical to public health contact tracing and case investigation: the locations, recalled contacts and events, and symptom history of a confirmed COVID-19 case.
Duties & Responsibilities: The primary task of this new position will be to lead front end development and back end server development of the CommonCircle apps and successfully integrate user feedback and stakeholder needs. Design and implement software for release that is robust, usable, and scalable. Evaluate and select appropriate technologies to support requirements at all levels, including but not limited to user interfaces and server backends.
Front-end mobile development (40%)
•Develop smartphone apps for both iOS and Android (or a single cross-platform app) that can be used by either: oTrained individuals (e.g., graduate student) for one-off data collection efforts oUntrained individuals (e.g., general public) participating in studies with 20-50 subjects at a time
Front-end web development (20%)
•Develop web portals for visualizing users’ data and possibly sending messages or other information back to users
Back-end server development (30%)
•Develop a server that receives users’ data and runs algorithms to produce a result that is returned back to them •Integrate incoming study app data into existing portals such as an electronic health record system
Other duties (10%)
•Participate in weekly research team meetings •Document code and system organization •Maintain and update code once it is released to study populations
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering or other equivalent field with applied programing. · At least three years of related work experience · Ability to develop a basic smartphone app (i.e., beyond “Hello World”) for both iOS and Android devices · Demonstrated ability to release quality products on schedule · Must have excellent communication and documentation skills · Must be highly organized and show a high level of attention to detail. · Must show demonstrated ability to function independently while exercising skill and informed professional judgment · Ability to multitask and work with multiple teams simultaneously · Must show demonstrated success in working with diverse populations. · Proficiency with the following programming languages / development tools: o App development skills: either iOS and Android or React Native o Cloud-based server experience: AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or another comparable platform
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired: · Prior work experience in an institution of higher education · Experience with developing HIPAA-compliant systems (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) · Effectively complete timeline-driven projects and deadlines, flexibility in schedule and additional hours beyond standard office hours may be required.
