Where the Chemistry Happens
We are seeking a motivated and creative professional like you to join the Bioenergy group in our newly founded Application Discovery team. In this role, you will report to the Head of the Bioenergy business and closely interface with the R&D and Application Solutions teams to design and test new product concepts that solve challenging problems facing the 1 st generation bioenergy market. Additionally, this hands-on position will also be responsible for cross-market activities incl. Food and other Technical applications.
As the Application Discovery Team Leader, you will be responsible for building a small high performing team to advance new enzyme product opportunities for BASF. This role spans the entire application development cycle from creating novel assays to develop a deep molecular level understanding of the application and the precise reactions involved, specifically probing the starch, oil, protein, and fiber components and how the biochemical, chemical, yeast metabolism, fermentation, and separations processes impact their complex interactions, to defining technical opportunities, technical success criteria, and ultimately a value proposition translation. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your starch and enzyme background, a thorough understanding of the role of the metabolism of yeasts, as well as existing and/or needed separation technologies with respect to side-product streams. You will also get to share your experience interacting with customers.
Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Formula for Success
Leveraging your educational and industrial background in starch chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, fermentation, or a related discipline (preferably combined with Bioethanol and/or Food Starch Processing industry experience), you will drive pipeline execution by technically supporting early stage abstract proof of concept projects, where creative design of experiment including new testing capabilities (e.g. develop small scale, medium or high throughput assays to bridge plant scale to lab scale protocols) and developing experiments that elucidate the precise mechanism of action of the enzymes on their substrates, within the complex mixtures involved, is critical to successfully identify and develop new product candidates.
Using your application understanding, you will deconstruct real process conditions into bench scale application tests and assays that meaningfully predict industry relevant outcomes.
Your robust problem-solving skills will be essential as you identify existing system bottlenecks (from a throughput point-of-view) and capability gaps.
Being relentless and having high energy, you will provide insights and proposals (including implementation) to close any capability gaps that are currently present.
Successfully engaging inside our global organization, you will work closely with R&D scientists, the Application Solutions teams and our market-facing teams (Sales and Technical Service) to match our capabilities to the market and customer needs.
Demonstrating your action oriented, entrepreneurial mindset, you will foster creative solution finding and collaborate closely with R&D to develop strong technical product strategies.
Utilizing your scientific rigor and critical thinking skills, you will ensure that experimental design is of high quality and is highly efficient in order to rapidly uncover new opportunities.
Your ability to work within a diverse highly skilled team directly as a supervisor, as well as indirectly, will be a valued asset as you drive ideas into reality; incubating and shepherding new and early-stage projects.
Your influential and effective communication style and presentation skills will be necessary when you engage with different levels within BASF, our partners and customers.
