Job Summary Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Crew Leader or a temporarily assigned Shift Leader completes semi-skilled routine, emergency, preventive maintenance and construction assignments relating to the operation and/or maintenance of the utility systems. Fires boilers and performs boiler maintenance such as adjustment of stokers, and greases and oils equipment. Samples and treats water systems including general water treatment activities such as water conductivity analysis, boiler chemical preparation, and water treatment system monitoring. Removes ash and soot from boiler systems. Unloads and dispenses coal from trucks. Fills bunkers and performs general ash and coal maintenance such as belt alignment, greasing conveyors, and clean up of ash / soot / coal. Note: This position requires the incumbent to complete a four-step trainee program to perform the duties of a Boiler/Chiller Operator. Upon completion of each step, the incumbent learns additional skills and assumes greater responsibilities. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED and one year of verifiable experience working in an industrial / mechanical / trade / utility type environment. Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University. Good interpersonal and communication skills including ability to interact and effectively communicate with a wide diversity of individuals. Ability to learn how to utilize relevant tools, equipment, techniques, skills, materials, and methods associated with the mechanical, electrical, or operational type maintenance field. Ability to read and follow blueprints and maintenance and operation manuals. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Demonstrated ability to work in a safe and efficient manner. Ability to perform basic computer operations and e-mail. Working Conditions / Demands Must be able to perform tasks requiring frequent heavy physical effort in extremely cramped, hot, cold, dusty, and wet environments. Must be able to lift or carry up to 75 pounds multiple times per shift.
