The University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) Data and Methods Hub (DMH) is seeking a motivated statistician who will collaborate with the health services research team led by the Department of Family Medicine.
This position will serve as a data analyst and statistician for several grant-funded research projects including the following:
Using longitudinal administrative claims data (OptumInsight and Medicare) to examine the modifying role of time-varying comorbid conditions and time-varying rehabilitative and therapeutic services for dementia-free survival time after traumatic spinal cord injury.
Candidates for this position must be driven, with an intellectual curiosity and desire to continue learning, as well as the ability to work on multiple projects at a time.
Strong statistical knowledge and aptitude to learn and develop expertise in time-varying survival analyses and the ability to use the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) are extremely important for this role.
This research team sits at the North Campus Research Complex and aims to improve the efficiency of healthcare in the United States by optimizing clinical practice and informing health policy.
The analyst will maintain their primary appointment in the IHPI Data & Methods Hub (DMH) which is a large institutional resource that provides data management and statistical expertise on a variety of projects within Michigan Medicine. The position will operate under the guidance and leadership of the Administrative Manager and Statistician Expert within the IHPI DMH. As a member of the DMH team, the analyst will have access to mentors who can help support career growth and provide guidance when encountering analytic challenges.
This position involves a wide range of tasks related to data management and analysis of quantitative data obtained from large national data providers such as OptumInsight and Medicare. Specifically, the position involves providing independent and collaborative statistical support including:
Working with administrative claims datasets using medical codes, such as International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th Revision (ICD9 and ICD10) as well as Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) to identify the appropriate cohort and variables of interest.
Developing and refining research and data collection strategies to support program outcomes.
Identifying programmatic or data issues and finding solutions.
Performing a wide range of analyses (i.e. descriptive analyses, frequency tables, logistic and Cox regression).
Providing guidance for study design issues.
Supporting faculty and staff in the development of quantitative analysis plans.
Writing, testing, and implementing programs using SAS/Stata/R to clean, manage, merge, and analyze large, complex administrative claims datasets. SAS is preferred for working with very large data (>1 Terabyte).
Preparing and maintaining technical documentation of data and analysis files.
Summarizing, interpreting, and presenting results in written, tabular and visual formats for reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
Assisting in the writing and editing of reports, abstracts, manuscripts, conference presentations, and grant proposals.
Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, biostatistics, computer science, information, or related field.
Five or more years of experience in data management and statistical analysis.
Proven ability to write clear and concise analytical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results, as well as create charts, tables, and other visual aids.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and take initiative while keeping supervisors and project leads informed
Experience with complex data structures and linkages between data sources.
Solid foundation in applied econometrics or statistics, including multiple regression modeling
Ability to be consistently detail-oriented.
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple researchers.
Ability to work effectively with limited supervision
Master’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, public health, or a related field.
Extensive experience using SAS.
Teaching orientation and interest or experience in communicating and sharing programming and statistical approaches with colleagues and other internal partners.
Knowledge of implementing time-varying covariates in survival models.
Conversant or some knowledge of the following statistical methodologies: hierarchical logistic and linear regression, Cox regression, propensity score matching and inverse probability treatment weighting, repeated measures analysis with various distributions for econometric analysis.
Experience managing and analyzing large national insurance claims data such as Medicare/Medicaid, OptumInsight, Truven MarketScan.
Experience with SQL.
