Senior Academic Development Specialist - (2100011X)
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - Office of Medical Education is currently recruiting for a Senior Academic Development Specialist . The Senior Academic Development Specialist assesses academic performance of all medical students, identifies students in academic difficulty and provides guidance or plan to intervene. Assists students in maximizing their effectiveness by building study skills. Prepares both general and personalized study plans and materials for make-up exams and retakes. Provides counseling and support to students as needed. Identifies potential non-documented learning distractors or challenges that may be having an adverse effect on the student's performance. Contributes to decision-making related to assessment, teaching methodologies, and continuous quality improvement.

Provide a wide range of supplemental instructional activities to improve student's academic achievement and deepen their understanding of course materials and instruction.
Design, develop, and coordinate individual remedial or tutorial curriculum that will provide educational experiences for preparing students for repeat/retake coursework and examinations. Collaborate with designated faculty in implementation and access program materials and design for each student.
Is a member of the Advancement Committee and works with them in shaping remedial plans for students, such as United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) exam preparation. Plans and conducts sessions to teach study skills techniques to medical students.
Assess student needs for reasonable accommodations and learning deficiencies, such as quiet room, additional time, etc. Consults with individual students to enhance their study skills. Assists and coordinates study plans to prepare students for exams and assignments to achieve academic goals. The also includes support for the OSA initiative to increase its focus on wellness along with increased programming through the Practice of Medicine. This position's participation in that effort will be critical as we attempt to maintain the academic health as well as the mental & physical health of each of our students.
Provides counseling and academic support for students identified as being at academic risk or request assistance to increase academic performance. Assess student progress by implementing recommended study aids and custom study plans. Monitor student performance over course of year to ensure academic success.
Works regularly with Assistant Dean of Assessment and Assistant Dean for Curriculum and participates in assessment and teaching methodology decision-making used for the medical student curriculum.
Helps insure that the current passing rate of our USMLE (US Medical Licensure Exam) does not drop as we transition to a new curriculum. Other schools who have changed their curriculum have noted an increased need for academic support as students adjust. Works to develop structured intensive study for students that are at high-risk for failing or have failed the examination.
Participates in the decision-making related to continuous quality improvement (CQI) process within the medical school.
Implements and facilitates (manages) peer tutoring program.
Complete oversight of the pre-matriculation summer program for incoming first year students by selecting student teachers and course participants, coordinating individual and group tutorials and study skill workshops. Collaborates with faculty mentors and student instructors to ensure program design and instruction meets the needs of the incoming students.
Conducts summer workshops for college and high school students enrolled in preparatory School of Medicine courses.
Track and maintains student academic progress. Provide guidance and assistance to all students who wish to increase their academic performance.
Participation in educational research-related projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, or or other related field of study.
Experience: Five (5) years of related experience providing educational skills counseling, training, instructional design, or other related experience.
Preferred: Ph.D. (or Ed.D) preferred; Background in medical education preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Possess knowledge of educational counseling including curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and measurement of training effects. Able to perform position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences. Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision. Possess strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems, make decisions, and prioritize. Remains abreast of innovative educational technologies as well as medicine-specific educational resources and technologies.
Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and ability to effectively use technology, including excel, databases, and electronic scheduling. Maintains productivity and uses knowledge strategies to increase personal counseling skills and abilities .
Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of students and information obtained.
Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with others to meet customer expectations and provide follow up with students.
