Position Title: Director of Marketing & Audience Development
Compensation: Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications. BSOC General Manager to provide details on benefits.
Reports To: General Manager with tasks assigned by Executive Director or Music Director
Direct Reports: Social Media Coordinator, all outside Media/Marketing vendors (e.g. web-design, PR and media consultants, etc.), Marketing interns.
FLSA Status: Full time, exempt
Work Schedule: Majority of duties are typically M-F. See Essential Duties below*.

Position Summary: The primary focus of this position is increasing, retaining, growing, and diversifying audiences for all types of performances across Yellowstone County. This position will oversee and manage BSOC’s full season marketing plan and promotion strategy with direction of Executive Director. Oversee and manage patron experience and using the BSOC’s multi-faceted sales and ticketing system (PatronManager).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Patron Services – Develop and implement strategies to maximize customer service and satisfaction in all aspects of the operation. Manage all aspects of PatronManager system as it relates to ticketing, oversee all aspects of season subscription and renewal campaigns. Coordinate communications including e-newsletters, collateral, ticket sales & distribution.
Sales – Creation, development, and implementation of subscription/single ticket campaigns to meet ticket revenue goals. Accountable for departmental revenue goals for approximately $500,000 annually (pre-pandemic), including merchandise and inbound advertising (assist with advertisement sales in BSOC’s bi-annual playbills). Evaluate sales trends and implement strategies based on ROI goals to increase earned revenue.
Audience Development – Create KPIs to build and attract new audiences with a goal of expanding the diversity of the BSOC audience to reflect our community.
Advertising – Originate and directly oversee advertising activities that develop creative, consistent, brand-specific ad campaigns.
Promotion Management – Develop and execute annual marketing promotion plan and strategy in alignment with BSOC’s Strategic Plan to reach organizational revenue goals. Develop campaigns to promote BSOC’s programs to increase short-term sales and improve results from other marketing programs.
Social Media – Establish and implement social media strategy with BSOC Social Media Coordinator to represent Billings Symphony’s brand across all channels. Enhance reach and engagement to augment sales related to ROI goals for each event/activity.
Website Management – Oversee the functionality and design of the BSOC website, evaluate content, SEO and CRM integration. Added responsibilities include writing, editing, and proofreading site content including crafting site promotions, and online outreach campaigns. Provide direction to website designers. Edit content within website as needed.
Public Relations – Oversee, organize, and implement press and media strategies to build reputation and ensure effective media coverage. Be knowledgeable of all BSOC activities and comfortable acting as spokesperson to communicate BSOC’s messages to the public and media.
Creative Art Assistance – Working with designers to produce art and designs for print and digital publications, products and advertising that maintain the vision for the BSOC branding.
Collateral – Collaborate with the artistic staff in the creation of streaming and web content. Supervise production/development of all printed/electronic collateral including and not limited to playbills, posters, and print/digital brochures.
Budget Planning – Assist Executive Director in establishing appropriate goals related to annual budget. Develop and maintain budgets related to all patron engagement and marketing campaigns. Create and monitor an annual marketing budget of approximately $100,000 in consultation with Executive Director and General Manager.
Community Engagement – Works closely with the Community Engagement and Education Departments to integrate PR and Marketing with their programming.
Administrative Assistance – Work with the general public, answer and transfer phone calls. Schedule appearances on TV and media, including Spotlight on the Arts for BSOC, a Billings Cultural Partners collaboration. Other basic administrative duties as assigned by Executive Director or General Manager not listed here.

Prior professional experience in digital, multimedia, and social marketing. Experience with software and platforms that support sales and marketing strategies – Adobe Creative Suite, CRM software PatronManager, Microsoft Office with strong emphasis in Excel, Google Apps, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and streaming platforms.
Understanding of or experience with a nonprofit organization.

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in marketing, communications, business, arts management or other related field.
An understanding of or experience with classical/orchestral music.
Experience with Beaver Builder WP page builder.
Information Technology (IT) knowledge.

Founded in 1950, the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale (BSOC) serves the Billings, Montana metropolitan area of 130,000+, and surrounding communities in eastern Montana and northern Wyoming. The BSOC is headquartered in downtown Billings and is the only professional symphonic organization within a 130-mile radius. The BSOC celebrates its 71st year of setting the standard for exceptional symphonic performance and community engagement to audiences in a regional population base of 250,000. Billings is a diverse community of 150,000. The annual performance season includes a seven-concert Classic Series, a free Family Concert, three Nutcracker performances with the San Diego Ballet, Symphony in the Park and numerous music education and community engagement activities. In 2019, the BSOC added their Sukin Series, a six-concert series of local, regional and global talent in chamber-style performances. The BSOC performs their Classic Series in the newly renovated Alberta Bair Theater. Other venues include the historic Billings Depot, Babcock Theater, and Lincoln Center. The 2021-2022 season marks Maestra Anne Harrigan’s 17th season as Music Director. BSOC highlights of the last 3 years include the additions of two new fulltime staff positions; the largest single gift in the organization’s 70-year history, a commercial property in downtown Billings that houses the Symphony’s office and also provides additional revenue from retail tenants; completed a half-million-dollar capital campaign to renovate the donated building; doubled our net assets to over five million dollars; increased the annual operating budget of $1.3 million by over 20%; grew the endowment by over 70%. Prior to the pandemic season, the BSOC saw record-breaking ticket sales. Throughout the last year, the BSOC was one of few orchestras in the US to thrive and produced an 18-week concert broadcast series. With the completion of a $13 million renovation of our main performance hall, the Alberta Bair Theater, the Billings Symphony has entered one of the most exciting periods in its history.
