Chief Operating Officer Available Immediately Full-Time, Exempt Washington, DC
The CCCU promotes, protects, and advances Christian higher education. Founded in 1976 the CCCU is the leading national voice for 140+ institutions in the United States and almost 50 more across the world. The CCCU, located in Washington, D.C., has 25 full-time employees and 10 part-time employees who reside in the greater DC area as well as in other parts of the United States, Ammon, Jordan and Oxford, England. The CCCU has grown in complexity and scope over the last 7 years under the leadership of President Shirley Hoogstra. The president has an increasing external portfolio due to advocacy, membership service and fundraising work. This position will ensure that the internal work of the organization is managed with care and clarity.
The Chief Operating Officer reports to the president and is responsible for the daily operations of the Office of the President, Advancement office, Research and Scholarship, IT and Facilities. Success in this role would be excellent relationships with the other senior staff and the President’s executive assistant, a collaborative record, and an effective set of direct reports. The role maximizes the effectiveness of the organization across departments and is experienced by others as a colleague who joins in and makes their work easier and more productive. In this role, he/she serves as a senior advisor to the President, executing her agenda, advising her on key priorities, interfacing with key constituencies on the President’s behalf, managing organizational business rhythms, and coordinating operations and special projects across departments. He/she is responsible for the development of systems and policies to ensure effectiveness and efficiency at the CCCU. This person manages confidential and sensitive issues for the president and assists other senior administrators to develop solutions to a wide range of issues.
The CCCU has real property in Washington, D.C, Costa Rica, and England. This role would manage or oversee, with local staff, those properties to maximize their effectiveness. The CCCU works with Design Data and has IMIS as their CMS.
Prioritization: Ensures the president focuses on highest and best use of her time. In consultation with the president’s executive assistant manages the flow of people and information to the President, prioritizing her time and interests.
Operations: Directs the staff and daily operations of the President’s office. Drives strategy for the office of the president and tracks the completion of initiatives of the CCCU and, more broadly, serves as a problem solver and decision catalyst across departments. Oversees the numerous real properties for maintenance and renovation as necessary. Directs the sale of real property as directed by the board of directors. Oversees the IT efforts of the council to effectuate maximum effectiveness and security.
Strategy and Counsel: Serves as a senior advisor to the President, briefing and advising her on key organizational priorities and the progress of departmental initiatives. Develops strategy with the President and cabinet, leads the implementation of the strategic plan 2021-2025 (in draft), oversees the advancement office lead by the director of development and research and scholarship initiatives lead by the Vice President for research and scholarship to insure maximum outcome and collaboration.
Executive Relations: Collaborates well with other senior staff. Enhances organizational operations across departments and may coordinate the Executive Cabinet. Serves as second in command when the president is out of the office. Attends meetings on behalf of the president.
Strategic Initiatives: Provides oversight and tracks strategic projects and key organizational initiatives. Helps foster innovation across departments and within the CCCU more broadly.

Have a demonstrated leadership ability with strong cross-functional experience and organizational judgment which shape this executive’s engagement with the team. This person will have experience making difficult decisions and sorting out complex and competing variables.
Understand key religious liberty and educational policy issues.
Understand and be able to effectively address challenging and divisive issues and conversations with internal and external constituents.
Have excellent skills in writing that will mark this executive’s engagement with the organization’s content production.
Have a deep understanding or work history with higher education, preferably with Christian higher education, or a legal background
Have a proven history in building consensus among diverse peer groups and understand the essential work and skills of diversity and inclusion.
Understand how to manage real estate on the macro level and property management for the DC operations.
Have a proven aptitude in IT.
Have a reputation for exceptional member services.
Have demonstrable skills in strategic planning and understand financial operations in order to serve well with the CFO.
Will have a master’s or other advanced degrees; JD or legal familiarity is desired
Will have 10 years of professional experience.
Virtual Work & COVID-19: Due to COVID-19, all staff are currently working remotely and will be until September 7, 2021, at which point staff will be required to work in the DC office Tuesday-Thursday with the opportunity to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Candidates must be able to work effectively in both an in-person and virtual environment.
