The Front-end Developer/Manager reports to the Associate Director of Web Strategy and User Experience in UMBC’s Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA). The candidate will be involved in the planning, development and maintenance of front-end web and mobile applications. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with hand-coding and have a passion for user experience, digital accessibility, clean code and responsive web design. The selected candidate will be eager to learn new frameworks, languages and technologies; delight users; and protect user data through compliance with privacy standards. The candidate will collaborate closely with colleagues in creative services, digital, IT, communications and marketing.
Specific duties include:
Collaborate with project stakeholders, a digital team, designers, web clients, and beyond to build and deploy new and updated web and mobile applications;
Serve as the lead of multiple simultaneous projects and move forward with them concurrently, adjusting timelines based on team and stakeholder priorities;
“Own” the maintenance of existing digital environment—this may include creating new display templates, developing new features, and fixing bugs;
Work closely with a UX researcher and digital design resources to ensure the technical feasibility of designs while maintaining a user-centric focus; and
Identify strategic opportunities for delivering improved digital products and services
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or related disciplines or a comparable combination of education and experience;
Three years of relevant experience in web development and production is required (Five years preferred)
Strong written and verbal communication skills and a high level of personal organization;
Demonstrated ability to navigate through a database or API, parse, process, format, and display content;
Experience with CSS preprocessors (e.g., SASS or LESS);
Ability to understand and to meet WCAG 2.0 web accessibility standards in all produced work;
Documented use of GIT source code control and branching methodologies, debugging, performance monitoring, benchmarking, logging, and testing tools;
Thorough processes for QA, cross-browser compatibility, and optimization;
Strong problem-solving skills; and
Strong interest in front-end programming and self-motivation to stay current on best practices in the field.
Ability to work with and understand best practices around the use of databases and APIs, including data integrity and data privacy;
General understanding of usability and information architecture;
Leverages digital design tools like Figma, Sketch, Balsamiq or Adobe XD;
Flexibility, adaptability, curiosity, humility, and a sense of humor; and
Ability to meet deadlines while working on multiple simultaneous high-level projects.
