DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the unit's Director, the Immigration Analyst serves as an active member of the advising team within the International Faculty & Scholars Office (IFSO). The incumbent will explain and interpret complex U.S. federal immigration and labor regulations and campus policies to UC San Diego academic departments and international scholars. Advise UC San Diego international visitors and academic departments regarding appropriate nonimmigrant and immigrant statuses. Analyze department requests and ensure issuance of appropriate immigration documentation. Direct international scholars in the preparation of successful applications pertaining to visas, nonimmigrant status, employment authorization, Social Security numbers, driver licenses, and any other requirements to successfully live in the U.S. and work at UC San Diego. Ensure that federal compliance requirements pertaining to US Departments of Homeland Security, State, and Labor regulations are met and in a timely fashion.

In coordination with the other Immigration Analysts, advise, prepare documents, and maintain data for nearly 3000 international faculty and scholars in nonimmigrant statuses typically found in academic settings (primarily J-1 and H-1B). Designated as a signature authority for University H-1B petitions and granted ARO status by U.S. Dept. of State. Serve as liaison with various U.S. government agencies, including U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Labor, the Social Security Administration, and the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Assist with coordination of J-1 and H-1B orientation sessions and provide orientation assistance to international scholars and their families with referrals and information about UC San Diego and the community, including health insurance and family matters. Participate in social, cultural, and educational programming initiatives for international scholars. Organize and implement training workshops for academic department representatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology or related field and a minimum two (2) years of work related to student or scholar advising activities in an academic setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience with ISSM or similar immigration database software. Knowledge of computer-based applications utilizing databases, word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web development tools including: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and calendar programs. Experience in spreadsheets, charts, or graphics to display data, and proficiency adapting programs to meet sophistication required. Ability to identify and access online campus information systems and resources.

• Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of and sensitivity to cross cultural issues in the advising process; verified ability to work with international scholars, staff and faculty. Ability to effectively work and interact with diverse groups and individual faculty, staff, students, university administrators with different needs, levels of urgency, levels of English, and levels of sensitivity. Ability to formulate and present written material in a logical and comprehensive manner.

• Ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail. Demonstrated record management experience. Proven skill in developing and maintaining precise organized records, files, and fili
