The University of Michigan-Flint Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is looking for an individual to fill either an intermediate or associate level Linux System Administrator position (level dependent on experience). You will be part of our existing system administration team and work with other Linux System Administrators to support our Linux infrastructure. You will work with Oracle Linux 7 and Oracle Linux 8 application, web, and database servers.
This is a full-time position eligible for benefits and will report directly to the System Administration team lead within centralized Information Technology Services (ITS).
Intermediate Level Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Mentor team members during the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of Linux operating systems in virtual, physical, and cloud environments.
- Performance tuning of Linux application and database servers.
- Employ automation tools for deploying software, patching servers, and operating systems.
- Monitor system and device activity for performance, identification of system problems, and inappropriate usage.
- Monitor and maintain databases such as: Oracle, MySQL, and SQL.
- Design and implementation of high availability(HA) database clusters.
- Securing Linux Systems against network attacks and vulnerabilities.
- Planning and coordinating disaster recovery support for Linux systems.
- Resolve Linux system and software failures.
- Assist other units on campus with software and hardware needs.
- Establish best practices for system documentation/maintenance.
- Other duties as required.
Associate Level Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Install, maintain and troubleshoot Linux operating systems in virtual, physical, and cloud environments.
- Performance tuning of Linux application and database servers.
- Employ automation tools for deploying software, patching servers, and installing operating systems.
- Monitor system and device activity for performance, identification of system problems, and inappropriate usage.
- Monitor and maintain databases such as: Oracle, MySQL, and SQL.
- Secure Linux Systems against network attacks and vulnerabilities.
- Coordinate system security activities including password reset and controlling user access control.
- Coordinate disaster recovery support.
- Resolve Linux system and software failures.
- Assist other units on campus with software and hardware needs.
- Other duties as required.
Intermediate Level Department Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and 2 or more years of relevant work experience in a related field.
- Proficiency working with modern Linux operating systems(Oracle Linux 7.x/8.x, or similar).
- Proficiency in the automated administration of Linux server(patching, software, configuration, and OS deployments).
- Proficiency managing MySQL/MariaDB and Oracle DBMS systems..
- Proficiency with enterprise level patch and configuration management systems.
- Proficiency with enterprise level virtualization environments such as VMWare, AWS, Oracle Linux VM, or Hyper-V.
- Proficiency with at least two of the following programming languages: SQL, PL/SQL, Perl, Java, Python, Powershell, or Bash scripting.
- Proficiency with network capable storage technologies.
- Proficiency with rack mounted server hardware and data center best practices.
- Proficiency with networking components such as DHCP, DNS, VLAN, local firewalls, NTP, and IPv6.
- Experience with Ansible/Terraform.
- Experience with Docker/Kubernetes.
- Experience architecting and implementing high availability(HA) solutions.
Associate Level Department Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or 1 or more years relevant work experience in a related field.
- Proficiency working with multiple modern Linux operating systems (Linux Oracle Linux 7.x/8.x,).
- Proficiency in managing either MySQL/MariaDB or Oracle DBMS systems.
- Proficiency with enterprise level virtualization environments such as VMWare, AWS, Oracle Linux VM, or Hyper-V.
- Experience with at least one of the following languages: SQL, PL/SQL, Perl, Java, Python, Powershell, or Bash scripting.
- Familiarity with network capable Storage technologies.
- Proficiency with networking components such as DHCP, DNS, VLAN, NTP, and local firewalls.
Departmental Desired Qualifications
- Experience with Ansible/Terraform
- Experience with Docker/Kubernetes.
- Experience with Git or version control systems.
- Programming/Scripting experience in at least three languages.
- Experience with centralized logging, such as Splunk.
- Experience with asset management, such as Device42.
- Experience with enterprise level monitoring software, such as Zabbix.
- Experience with web servers, such as Apache and Tomcat.
- Experience with patch management systems, such as Spacewalk or Red Hat Satellite.
- Experience with fiber storage networks.
- Experience with change management systems and protocols.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure providers, such as: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. The primary position is an Intermediate level with a pay range of $61,300.00-$75,000.00 with an Associate level underfill of $50,700-$62,000.00.
