Applications Engineer, Department of Physics - Georgetown College Georgetown UniversityLocated in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.
RequirementsApplications Engineer, Department of Physics - Georgetown College - Georgetown UniversityThe environmental challenges of the 21st Century necessitate a change in the way business is conducted in the manufacturing industry. US manufacturers are seeking more efficient use of resources to better steward natural resources. The concept of a Circular Economy, where waste materials find new uses in the broader economy, has the potential to address this problem. The means to achieving such a system demands new technologies and operational processes. In this research, we will explore mechanisms to enable a Circular Economy with a focus on measurements and information standards needed to foster broader participation from the manufacturing industry towards redirecting discarded materials from landfills for more productive uses. Standards will be foundational for enacting this vision as a well-functioning system of systems where discarded materials are put to best use for needed purposes. The research will explore life cycle perspectives toward a Circular economy, material flow optimization, digital twin representations to support a Circular Economy, requirement identification of different stakeholder groups, and technical barriers to participation in an optimized system with an emphasis on the need for standards. We seek a Fellow to find measurement and information standards solutions to support the development of a circular economy for manufacturing.
The
National Institute of Standards (NIST)/Georgetown University Professional Research Experience (PREP) requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. One need is for technical experts (including biomedical, computer, mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and materials science) to provide application support for the different areas that form part of the PREP. This directly improves the quality and quantity of research in collaboration between NIST and Georgetown GU).
The
Applications Engineer, a PREP member, performs technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration in key responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
- Investigating technology applications to facilitate the Circular Economy.
- Determining methods for mapping disparate datasets across multiple life cycle areas.
- Applying optimization, ML/AI, and other algorithms toward meeting the first two responsibilities.
- Formulating Circular Economy and/or digital twin frameworks toward standardization.
- Identifying opportunities for the transfer of data formats, methods, measurements, and information systems into standards for the Circular Economy.
- Presenting results to program managers, at conferences, and in meetings with stakeholders.
- Documenting results and making results available to the public.
Qualifications- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field.
- Familiarity with activity, material flow, and process modeling - i.e., IDEF0, BPMN, UML, Functional Modeling
- Expert experience in on-going approaches toward sustainability assessment and practice - i.e., LCA, Lean Principles
- Understanding of sustainability goals and life cycle thinking
- Ability to theorize and develop amalgam applications of data mapping, computational modeling, and knowledge extraction.
- Familiarity with processes for engineering, manufacturing, and/or supply chain operations.
- Ability to develop prototypes of tools needed to analyze data.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
