The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Office of the Provost has an opportunity for an Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development. The Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development (AVP-FD) will have a faculty appointment and oversee faculty affairs including faculty development and mentorship programs in close collaboration with the Deans, and other senior leadership. The position will assess needs, develop, implement and evaluate strategies to assist schools in faculty progression according to established Appointment and Promotion Criteria. Additionally, the position will support the advancement of a diverse faculty, on both tenure and non-tenure tracks, and support the advancement of a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Vice Provost reports to the Vice Provost of Academic and Student Affairs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensure the continued excellence of UMB faculty through the building of a strong, inclusive, and collaborative faculty community.
In conjunction with school leadership, initiate the design, implementation, and evaluation of faculty development and mentoring programs that support faculty progression.
Provide executive leadership to the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) and supervise the Director of the FCTL, who will also serve as program director of the PhD in Health Professions Education.
Assist the UMB schools in implementing professional development plans for faculty to address challenges and opportunities teaching students, engaging in scholarship, participating in professional service, and other professional development needs.
Work with the Provost and senior leadership to identify priorities in strategic faculty recruitment.
Establish systems to monitor the impact of faculty development programs and mid-rank review.
Maintain ongoing communication with academic leadership in the schools and relevant faculty leaders regarding faculty developmental needs in teaching, research, practice, and service.
Work with the UMB school leadership to foster an environment of academic excellence, collaboration, diversity, and inclusiveness.
Monitor strategic faculty recruitment goals and targets; analyze and identify trends and issues along with proposed action steps to remedy or enhance faculty development and retention.
Implement and oversee a Faculty Onboarding Program
Lead or support new initiatives as identified by leadership or through campus needs assessments.
Work collaboratively with the executive leadership team to achieve university goals.
Sustain a personal scholarly agenda, including faculty development research, educational presentations, and dissemination of UMB programs.
Qualifications

- A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in an academic discipline from a regionally accredited college or university.
- A record of teaching and scholarship sufficient to earn the rank of associate professor or full professor in one of the disciplines at the university.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education including educational program direction and curricula development.
- Experience in faculty development, such as mentoring, peer review, or service as a department chair.
- Experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, policies, or research.
- Excellent management, collaboration, communication, and leadership skills.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including the means to address issues clearly and in non-confrontational and non-polarizing ways to a range of diverse audiences.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

- Demonstrated ability to write handbooks, guides, web pages and other communication or training materials suitable for a faculty audience
- Excellent interpersonal, listening and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional relationships and empathy with faculty members.
- Subject matter expertise related to faculty development, diversity and engagement, including familiarity with research on faculty development and engagement of underrepresented groups within the academy.
- Flexibility to undertake tasks necessary to implement programs from beginning to end, including high level strategy, as well as tactical hands-on event coordination and administration.
- The successful candidate will have capabilities in the areas of managing complexity, decision quality, interpersonal savvy, communicating effectively, and managing conflict.
