The NCI is seeking an innovative and energetic leader to serve as its Deputy Director and Chief Technology Officer (dual role) for the Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP). The DCP (http://prevention.cancer.gov/) conducts and supports research to determine a person's risk of cancer and to find ways to reduce the risk. Research fostered by the Division focuses on translational prevention and detection, but also spans the disease process: early interventions to stop or slow the progression of cancer, and symptom management during treatment.
The Deputy Director and Chief Technology Officer (DD/CTO), DCP, serves as a senior scientific authority within the DCP and NCI and is responsible for establishing the research agenda and overseeing research with aim to identify and expand technological solutions to fundamentally improve cancer prevention and symptom management. Specifically, the DD/CTO exercises responsibility for the following:
Leads scientific discovery and research programs on technology solutions to enhance and improve cancer prevention and symptom management. Exercises major scientific responsibilities to accelerate public-private, international, and trans-NCI, trans-NIH (e.g., National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)) partnerships; facilitate rapid, culturally appropriate implementation of emerging and existing technologies through interactions with industry; and coordinates intramural and extramural research programs on technological solutions to cancer prevention and symptom management.
Participates with the Director, DCP, and the Principal Deputy Director, DCP, in the planning, direction, implementation, and evaluation of research programs utilizing technological solutions to improve and enhance cancer prevention; initiates, develops, and maintains liaisons, and collaborations within the overall Federal research effort.
Provides direction and oversight for DCP’s senior professional staff responsible for managing a portfolio of research on cancer prevention technologies, including imaging and image analysis, ‘omics, novel molecular techniques for measuring biomarkers in biospecimens (e.g., liquid biopsies), translation of discoveries into prototype products, drug discovery and delivery, new assays, and other biomedical engineering, bioengineering, and technology developments that will enhance and lead to new discoveries in cancer prevention research.
Analyzes and synthesizes the components of cancer prevention technological solutions research to identify research priorities and forward strategies.
Uses diversified science assessment approaches to recommend decisions to the Director relative to program direction, emphasis, integration, discontinuation, or augmentation of research programs, in conjunction with committed research goals, advice of outside experts, available financial and staff resources, and needed facilities.
Plans and coordinates strategic research directions aimed at achieving a favorable climate for productive research and programs of the highest scientific quality; monitors program efforts and makes decisions necessary for accomplishing program goals within available resources. Represents the DCP, NCI, and NIH in communicating scientific needs and results to diverse communities served by the NCI.
M.D. or Ph.D. degree in a biomedical engineering, biomedical science, bioengineering, or biotechnology, or other relevant engineering/science discipline, with demonstrated experience in technology solutions for health.
Established and led a successful biomedical technology-oriented research program in academia or industry with a proven record of publications/patents and raising research funds.
Ability to lead, implement, and evaluate scientific discovery and research programs on technology solutions relevant to cancer research and care. Knowledge and experience directly related to improving cancer prevention, screening and early detection and symptom management are considered a plus.
An experienced leader and manager responsible for providing direction and oversight for senior professional staff who manage a portfolio of research grants on cancer prevention technologies.
Experience in establishing successful partnerships with a broad range of agencies, academia and industry to establish a pipeline to support translation and commercialization of new technologies.
Excellent written and oral communications skills as demonstrated through publications and presentations.

The Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) conducts and supports research to determine a person's risk of cancer and to find ways to reduce the risk. This knowledge is critical to making progress against cancer because risk varies over the lifespan as genetic and epigenetic changes can transform healthy tissue into cancer.
With an overall goal to detect such changes and intervene early in the cancer process to prevent symptomatic disease and death, DCP funds and provides support to clinical and laboratory researchers, community and multidisciplinary teams, and scientific networks.
