FACILITY OPERATIONS-IUB (BL-PHYP-IUBLA)

The mission of the IU Bloomington Facility Operations is to operate and maintain a high-quality physical environment to enhance student learning, faculty teaching, and research. We serve other non-academic departments, and we support the University's service to the community and citizens of Indiana.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Crew Leader or a temporarily assigned Shift Leader completes semi-skilled routine, emergency, preventive maintenance and construction assignments relating to the operation and/or maintenance of the utility systems.
• Fires boilers and performs boiler maintenance such as adjustment of stokers, and greases and oils equipment.
• Samples and treats water systems including general water treatment activities such as water conductivity analysis, boiler chemical preparation, and water treatment system monitoring.
• Removes ash and soot from boiler systems.
• Unloads and dispenses coal from trucks.
• Fills bunkers and performs general ash and coal maintenance such as belt alignment, greasing conveyors, and clean up of ash / soot / coal.

General Responsibilities

• Performs ash and soot removal, unloads coal trucks, fills bunkers, and general ash and coal maintenance.
• Fires boilers, samples and treats water, general water treatment, and boiler maintenance.
• Monitors chilled water system and responds to alarms as needed.
• Attends all mandatory and on-the-job training sessions.
• Performs other duties as needed to relating to the operation and/or maintenance of the Utility production and distribution systems.

Note: This position requires the employee to complete a four-step trainee program to perform the duties of a Boiler/Chiller Operator. Upon completion of each step, the employee learns additional skills and assumes greater responsibilities.

EDUCATION

Required

• High school diploma or GED

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 5 years of related experience
• Completion of the Boiler Operator tract of the Utility Trainee program OR five (5) years of verifiable experience.

• Equipment utilized: Coal conveyor systems, boiler systems, electrical distribution and their sub-systems. Tools involved in ash pulling, painting, cleaning, drilling, light bulb changing, parts delivery, water analysis and maintenance at a skilled level. Personal Protective Equipment: Hard hat, safety glasses, steel toed boots, hearing protection, work gloves, respirator.
• Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner while following oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read and follow blueprints and manuals related to maintenance and operations.
• Ability to perform basic computer operations and use email.
• Must read, write and speak the English language in a fluently.
• Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Bloomington, Indiana

This position is part of a tiered pay program that is based on a percentage of the current hire rate of a Boiler/Chiller Operator, which currently is $25.24 per hour. Employee's pay will follow a set schedule as they progress through the training program. Their starting rate will be $18.93 per hour 75% of full rate, and will increase with completion of each step following this set schedule: 80% / 85% / 90% / and 100% of the current hire rate at the time of completing the training program.

Available for overtime work, shift work, and/or oncall duties as assigned.
