About the Job
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the University of Minnesota seeks an experienced Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) Developer to support and grow our Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and data data integration environment.
This position will be responsible for the development, support, and continuous improvement and expansion of data warehousing and data integration solutions. Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate a solutions-focused, positive approach to problem-solving with the ability to work well both collaboratively and independently, and with the ability to effectively manage expectations and competing priorities. Job Responsibilities:
Data warehouse development and support (70%)
- Set up and execute extract, transformation and load (ETL) functions.
- Develop and optimize SQL statements, stored procedures, and views using industry best practices for security and efficiency.
- Conduct performance optimization, including query tuning, process structuring/scheduling, schema adjustments, code refinements, and scaling analysis.
- Create, document, and execute test plans/test cases/scripts to validate data models, metadata, and completeness and accuracy of data.
- Monitor systems to ensure data warehouse is running at peak performance; remediate failures of automated jobs quickly.
- Develop and manage methods to create, store, and maintain metadata for usage tracking, interoperability, and comprehensive management of business semantics.
- Work with Developers and Subject Matter Experts (SME) to develop target data models and identify, develop, and document accurate source-to-target database mapping logic.
- Provide guidance to less experienced ETL developers on development best practices
- Participate in ETL code reviews and efficiency enhancements
Requirements analysis and documentation (20%)
- Meet with clients to elicit and understand requirements, translate business processes and definitions into data terms, and facilitate shared understanding of data definitions among multiple stakeholders.
- Work with various stakeholders to identify correct data source(s) and analyze source data to understand and document data structure, definitions, accuracy, and anomalies.
- Develop and maintain technical design, metadata, and business definition documentation.
- Research and Propose operational improvements using workflows and technical improvements
Project coordination and other duties as assigned (10%)
- Research, understand, and apply appropriate governance and compliance requirements (e.g., FERPA) and digital accessibility best practices.
- Develop and manage work estimates, expectations, and project plans including priorities, deliverables, timelines, and coordination of efforts including scheduling and facilitation of meetings.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and four years of relevant experience or a comparable combination of education, training, and experience
- Experience with data warehousing and manipulation/ETL (extract, transformation and load) using ETL tools such as Informatica, SSIS or IBM Data Stage
- Experience developing PL/SQL and/or T-SQL DDL and DML and performance tuning
- Familiarity with ETL version control
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Oracle Analytic Server, Oracle Cloud Server, Tableau
- Understanding of data governance
- Experience working in an Agile development environment
- Understanding of business analysis and/or project management methodologies
- Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python,, Shell scripting). Knowledge of API’s and web services
