Reporting to the Director of Data Management & Business Intelligence, the Business Intelligence Developer is responsible for collaborating with colleagues in the OIR and other campus constituents to support data management and reporting efforts to meet internal and external business needs. This position is vital to developing data sources, creating efficiencies for the OIR, and surfacing data to constituents university-wide leading to data-informed decision-making. This role is also essential to instilling a culture of data literacy and self-service business intelligence.
The Business Intelligence Developer is responsible for design, development, testing, and maintenance of existing and future data structures, BI environment, and dashboards. This person will understand down-stream impact of changes in operational processes and procedures that affect data and reporting and will respond accordingly. The person in this role must use multiple technologies and platforms (e.g., SAS, SQL, MS Access, MS Excel, Student Information and Customer Relationship Management systems) and use multiple data sources across those platforms to identify the appropriate instances, tables, and fields necessary to respond to business needs.
Responsibilities include:
- Communicate with personnel across campus to identify business requirements and appropriate data sources and translate them to Business Intelligence reporting solutions used to satisfy business or reporting needs.
- Enhance and develop new BI reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using best practices (technical specification, project management documentation, version control, internal validity testing, end-user acceptance) that provide business intelligence objects to users that are clear, accessible, and user-friendly across various technology platforms and end user skill levels.
- Integrate data from disparate data sources (SIS, RM, LMS, internal data stores) to build data structures and implement sound data warehousing techniques to populate and store data securely, accurately, and efficiently.
- Perform data audits and data validation, build data integrity checks to identify data quality issues, and work with appropriate staff to resolve those issues as needed.
- Develop documentation and instructional and training materials that will help constituents navigate BI solutions and consume information efficiently, including maintenance of a data dictionary to promote a culture of data literacy and data governance.
- Provide appropriate levels of access to data and develop processes to notify end users of updates, edits, training, and process failures related to data and BI tools.
- Enhance current reporting solutions and assist in identifying new reporting solutions that will create efficiencies for OIR staff and campus constituents.
- Collaborate with OIR colleagues to determine and respond to data needs, changes to existing reports, and the creation of new reporting solutions. Review existing processes and work with OIR colleagues to implement automated business intelligence solutions and gain efficiencies.
- Work with Advanced Data Analytics and OIR team members to ensure timely and accurate data submissions to meet regulatory reporting requirements.
- Utilize programming skills to create queries to access, transform, and prepare data for modeling, analysis, and reporting purposes.
- Stay informed of current business practices, data structure, and technology changes that may impact BI environment and respond by making appropriate adjustments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field and two years of work experience.
- Two years of hands-on experience in an enterprise data environment with the following technologies/tools: SQL or SAS programming, data analysis, business intelligence, development of data structures, and data visualization software.
- Knowledge of data governance.
- Knowledge of creating technical specification/documentation.
- Knowledge of enterprise reporting.
- Knowledge of data warehouse (design/management) or relational databases.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in SAS programming.
- Proficiency in SAS Viya Visual Analytics, SAS Data Integration Studio, or SAS Data Management Studio.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Access.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience working in higher education.
