ABOUT TEAM PSD
The Research & Development Manager will join an interdisciplinary team working to change the way health care quality improvement decisions are made, such as across layers of the Veterans Health Administration, and with state health departments and other healthcare systems (see https://mtl.how/team, https://mtl.how/demo and https://mtl.how).
Team Participatory System Dynamics (TeamPSD) engages stakeholders in shared decision-making cadences while maintaining transparency and reproducibility via open science platforms and principles. We partner in iterative cycles of development and implementation to advance scientific understanding of technology-embedded health system decision-making, and implementation and improvement processes over time.
ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Research & Development Manager will coordinate a portfolio of research grants funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), Veterans Health Administration (VA), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). The Research and Development Manager is part of the new Team PSD management trio, which also includes the DataOps/DevOps Manager and the PeopleOps Manager. The Research & Development Manager will be responsible for research and development workstreams, which include the workflows of co-investigators, mentees (post-bac, predoctoral, postdoctoral, intern & resident), and co-coordination of qualitative/quantitative mixed methods research and training.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Lindsey Zimmerman - Implementation Scientist at the Veterans Health Administration, Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OMHSP), National Center for PTSD - the Research & Development Manager will develop new lines of scientific inquiry, establish research methods and productivity, and ensure compliance with reporting and publication of federally-funded peer-reviewed scientific research.
This is a full-time position. You can telecommute 100% of the time and work from anywhere. There is office space in Menlo Park, CA, but the team is nationally distributed. The team works with partners within the United States from Eastern to Hawaii time zones and team meetings occur Monday to Thursday between 7:45AM and 4PM Pacific Time. Team members work either four 10-hour days Mon-Thurs or five 8-hour days with no meetings on Fridays.

Team and Collaboration Management:
Coordinate Research, Development, and Operations activities with other managers.Manage Research & Development workflows including researchers, engineers, data scientists, and Team PSD mentees
Manage Research & Development schedules, platforms/channels, meetings, quality assurance, and deliverables across R & D platforms: GitHub, Open Science Framework, ReqLogic (invoices/purchasing), VA Palo Alto Research Development Information System, Stanford IRB (eProtocol), National Center for PTSD Patient Care Services and Productivity Data Base, VA RedCap and Stanford RedCap, VA Office of Research and Development ART tracker, and ClinicalTrials.gov
Anticipate what is needed, direct the activities of the team, and facilitate shared understanding through effective coaching
Motivate team members growing into increasing responsibility
Research and Development Management:
Manage multiple funding cycles across different federal funders at once
Ensure that project aims are achieved and project output is highly valued by NIH and VHA stakeholders (patients, providers, policymakers and scientific communities)
Disseminate Team PSD progress and research findings through appropriate online channels and team resources.
Create effective written communication for high volume and high visibility requests
Produce and coordinate reports, presentations and peer-reviewed manuscripts
Develop and experiment with new tools and techniques, identifying ways to streamline activities.
3 years or more of experience managing national trials or multi-disciplinary federally funded research
Experience coordinating workflows with other managers, including managing shifting priorities, timelines and change effectively
Experience managing peer-reviewed conferences and manuscripts
Experience completing tasks for federal contracting with the appropriate organizational authorities
Proficiency with GitHub and Markdown (or highly similar platforms). We also use ZenHub for key reporting and costing of R&D activities
Strong, clear, concise written and oral communication in English online and in-person
Proven ability to establish trust and rapport via written, in-person and phone interactions
Demonstrated excellence in planning, tracking, organizing and communicating with clarity and efficiency
Creative problem-solving skills
Ability to manage simultaneous requests with a high level of responsiveness
Proven ability to manage time effectively to manage multiple project timelines without losing site of the highest priorities for the program.
Ph.D. in related applied disciplines of behavioral health, social sciences, medical or public health research, engineering, computer science or statistics
Training in community-based participatory research, participatory action research or mixed methods (qualitative + quantitative) research designs.
Familiarity with health care, quality improvement and electronic health record data
