The Experience Design & Development team within University Information Technology Service (UITS) at Indiana University works closely with partners in communication and marketing and UITS. We are responsible for IU's gateway websites (iu.edu, iupui.edu, Indiana.edu), as well as a number of online applications to serve students, faculty, and staff. We are a cross-functional team comprised of developers, user experience designers, and content specialists. Our goal in all we do is to create sites and services that are inclusive (accessible), easy to use, and help our visitors accomplish their goals.
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced frontend developer who understands the importance of UX, can define and deliver new features, and translate designs into inclusive, functional code.
General Responsibilities
Develops user-centered software applications, including building and implementing advanced back-end (APIs, databases) and front-end (interfaces, web-based tools) solutions.
Consults with project owner(s), client(s), and/or User Experience designer(s) to develop project plans; translates advanced design concepts into detailed technical requirements.
Leads in the creation of integrations and APIs for developers to easily access public university data.
Ensures testing and reviews peer code, documentation, and prototyping; applies accessibility standards and UX design patterns uniformly across all projects, identifying and resolving bugs and issues with accessibility and design implementation.
Makes recommendations to improve, as well as implements, documentation standards, development guidelines, and promotes UX development best practices.
Leads in the development of training and information-sharing through seminars and various communications to user departments and internal staff.
Ensures that all UX development complies with university accessibility and development standards and protocols; researches and stays up-to-date with UX development techniques and approaches to improve visual appeal, performance, and overall user experience.
May serve as UX development project lead; often provides guidance to junior peers.

EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science, human-computer interaction, or related field)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
5 years of programming, UX/UI development, or related experience
Preferred
Experience with Indiana University tools, systems, and development practices

Advanced understanding of the major browsers (Firefox, internet explorer, Safari, Chrome, Edge, etc.) and creating sites/systems to work with varying browser capabilities
Advanced knowledge in good user-centered design methods and usability evaluations
Familiar with one or more front-end frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, Vue.js, Foundation Bootstrap, Rivet Design System)
Advanced understanding and strong ability to write in one or more back-end languages (e.g. Java, PHP, C#, Node.js)
Preferred
Ability to structure and write code in a reusable and intuitive way
Knowledge of build and deployment processes and automation
Experience reviewing and interacting with interface designs in Figma or similar design tools
Experience working with REST and other web APIs to consume and post data with external services
Understanding of progressive enhancement, graceful degradation, and responsive design and how to apply these principles
Knowledge of at least one full technology stack for web development (e.g. LAMP, MEAN, WINS)
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Bloomington, Indiana
This position is eligible for remote work or to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
