Position Summary:
The School of Social Ecology is an internationally recognized pioneer in developing interdisciplinary approaches to social problems that encourage flexibility and independent thinking among faculty and students and nourish collaboration across different fields and with people of many different experiences. Faculty in the three highly-ranked departments within the School of Social Ecology share a commitment to scholarship that views human behavior in a larger social and institutional context, that moves beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, and that seeks to disseminate knowledge beyond the confines of the university to a broader public. The faculty pursue knowledge production and dissemination in the service of fostering informed social action as they address issues ranging from global poverty to prison overcrowding, from gang violence to healthy child development, from health risks to community empowerment.
The Executive Director of Development (EDOD) for the School of Social Ecology is a senior-level development professional who works collaboratively with the Dean of Social Ecology and University Advancement (UA) to lead the development program of the School and secure significant philanthropic investments to support it. The primary activity of the EDOD is externally focused to secure private philanthropic support, and the EDOD's effectiveness will be evaluated on the ability to achieve financial goals and meet metrics. The EDOD reports directly to unit leadership, with a dotted line to University Advancement. The EDOD is expected to serve as a member of the leadership team and to also be a highly collaborative colleague within the School of Social Ecology and with other development officers across the campus.

At least seven years of successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in higher education.
Experience-based knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising for comprehensive research university, including the ability to direct a complex development program.
Strong collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone.
Experienced in operating under a prospect moves-management system that utilizes a central database. Collaborative in nature knowing that many donors' interests involve multiple parts of the university. Documented success personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that leverage a relationship-building and moves-management approach leading to successful gift closure.
Demonstrated achievement in securing philanthropic investments.
Ability to work independently with both School and institutional goals in mind . Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible . Ability to effectively manage complex situations involving multiple and sometimes competing constituencies. Strong people management skills to effectively recruit, engage, manage and develop a professional development team.
Ability to represent the institution professionally, externally and internally
Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Salesforce or comparable a donor/prospect database system
Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans
Demonstrable experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments
Bachelor's degree in related area.
Excellent strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, persuasion / negotiation skills and marketing skills. Excellent skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals. Excellent knowledge of leadership / management concepts, procedures, techniques and best practices. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills, including excellent political acumen skills, to build and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies. Excellent knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc. Excellent knowledge of the campus, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure and current issues of concern and knowledge of issues of concern for higher education, generally. Excellent leadership / management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
Special Conditions Required:
May work long hours to meet fundraising commitments
Local, regional, and national travel is required.
Must be able to pass both a background, and DMV check
