Department Overview
The Interoperability Engineer is responsible for system integration, data conversion, engineering and implementation of Epic Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) Application Programming Interface (API) and non-FHIR API integrations. Providing technical expertise in the analysis, build and support of simple Epic FHIR and non-FHIR API integrations. Troubleshoots FHIR and non-FHIR API integration related issues and documents resolution. Works with Epic, ITG Epic Client System Administrators, ITG Epic Database Administrators, and 3rd party vendors on application fixes, system build, special updates and annual releases. The Interoperability Engineer implements simple system-to-system FHIR and non-FHIR API integrations between the Epic application, State Agencies, and OHSU departmental applications such as Imaging, Medical Records, Radiology, Laboratory, Registration and ADT. Integrations include the outgoing data transfer for use cases such as research data exchange, shared decision making, patient engagement, insurance verification, order entry, results reporting and care management. Standards include HL7 FHIR and CDA formats as well as XML and JSON, and SMART and OAuth 2.0 protocols.
Function/Duties of Position
System Engineering and Analysis: - Participates in the system build, validation, and implementation of new features, workflow improvements, and optimization related to interoperability solutions in Epic.
- Reviews executable pathways for both vendor supplied and custom-developed applications and moves executables into the appropriate libraries or executable paths.
- Researches, organizes and distributes technical information from multiple sources, including vendor websites, list services and other vendor support services.
- Thoroughly understand and document customer's business processes and how FHIR and non-FHIR API integration supports these processes.
- Assist in developing training for customers on new or modified systems.
- Works with Database Administrators and System Administrators to provide appropriate application security levels to protect the database and administer the appropriate security levels for all customers
- Translate FHIR and non-FHIR API integration specifications into a working data transfer flow between systems.
- Completes data mapping requirement from one system to another.
- Has working knowledge of the HL7 FHIR standard and general web services.
- Understand the integration of Epic application data and the HL7 FHIR standard for data transfer.
- Write and perform system-to-system FHIR and non-FHIR API validation plans and oversee the validation effort using departmental resources.
- Work seamlessly with Epic Client System Administrators and Database Administrators for all supported systems.
System Build/Maintenance: - Demonstrate knowledge of key Epic applications and industry standard interoperability solutions; HL7 FHIR standard, Epic web services or non-FHIR APIs, Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and understand the integration/impact with other key Epic applications, including EpicCare, RX, Beacon, ADT, Prelude, Cadence, Beaker, Connect, MyChart, etc.,
- Follow system standards for technical build migration to production system.
- Analyze Epic functionality to simplify processes, improve flow of data, and make use of enhancements.
- Responsible for working with vendors in applying new system releases for major clinical and administrative system, integrating vendor supplied applications and releases into the existing network, including client server GUI, and implementing Web Internet, intranet, and extranet applications within the existing network and database(s).
- Recompiles all appropriate applications when applying new releases of products.
- Develop test plans/documentation, conduct testing and validation as appropriate for system upgrades
- Follow the approved Epic Change Management policy
- Review, validate and document progress for monthly special updates.
Problem Resolution: - Respond to customer problems and issues, either by Epic Support Desk referrals or direct customer contact.
- Communicate problem progress and resolution, and document in Jira as appropriate.
- Analyze problems to determine if it is necessary to resolve, if needed, escalate it to Epic TS.
- Manage assigned Jira tickets to ensure resolution or closure of tickets in a timely manner
- Communicate with Epic TS on the prioritization of issues to meet OHSU needs.
Project Management: - Assume project management responsibilities for the implementation of the simple FHIR and non-FHIR API integrations between Epic and 3rd party systems by developing detailed project plans with dependencies and critical path tasks.
- Work with customers, vendors and ITG to identify resources required to implement FHIR and non-FHIR API integrations.
- Assist customers through various approval processes required for FHIR and non-FHIR API projects.
- Ensure that development and implementation objectives are met for FHIR and non-FHIR API integrations.
- Assume project management responsibilities for small Care Everywhere projects or sub-projects.
- Ensure that all components of a project plan are completed including design, build, testing, validation, training and communication.
This position is currently 100% telework/remote and may include remote work long-term. Candidate must be able to work from home full-time initially.
Required Qualifications
Education:Bachelor's degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and six years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR Associate's degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and seven years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OREight years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OREquivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate's degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor's degree.Experience:
- Successful candidates must have experience and working knowledge in healthcare system software, the HL7 FHIR specification, OAuth 2.0, SMART, and CDS Hooks as well as technical application support for administrative and clinical systems.
- Two or more years of paid work experience as a Systems/Application Analyst or Application Administrator.
