The Web Developer primary responsibilities revolve around supporting, front and back-end development while enhancing Bucknell's digital presence (public website, intranet, blogs, mobile applications, third-party software), with a particular emphasis on prospective student and alumni engagement. This position reports to the Associate Director of Web & Digital Communications and is part of the Division of Communications. The Web Developer works with the latest web technologies and software development processes to meet the growing complex information needs of the University. This hands-on position works collaboratively with colleagues in the Division of Communications team and the broader campus community, as well as independently, and serves as a web developer with the Digital Communications team in areas of analysis, design, modification and maintenance of web applications and integrated systems.
Job Duties: Project Management Serve as a project manager and liaison with campus partners who have responsibility for providing or creating content for departmental web pages. Provide web content management guidance, training and expertise. Ensure that University visual identity design and branding standards are upheld. Participate in decisions concerning the design and architecture of Bucknell's websites. Create design documents, mock-ups and proof of concept systems for new web features. Establish and manage multiple projects simultaneously using a project management system. Create project schedules and ensure that milestones and deadlines are consistently achieved.
Email & Communication Coordinate, test and produce targeted email campaigns for constituencies across the University, incorporating industry-related best practices to create messages that display well and are responsive across all common email clients. Develop and maintain web services and APIs for data connectivity between multiple sources. Create, and maintain design templates.
Browser & Compatibility Resolve browser compatibility issues and program bugs, and design responsive and mobile-friendly user interface. Ensure cross-browser, cross-platform and cross-device compatibility, as well as methods for degrading for older browsers and displays.
Content Management Systems Create, edit and enhance web content using a Content Management System (CMS). Manage front- and back-end development and maintenance of Bucknell's content management systems. This includes, but not limited to, system design, user experience and accessibility.
Coding & Development A strong work ethic and passion for backend development Build and maintain responsive websites and mobile-first structure. Assist campus partners with web-related requests requiring technical support such as editing HTML/CSS, JavaScript and PHP on web products, and all web-related requests. Local environment setup of the Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL. Expertise in using Git, CI tools and Containerized environments Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, and perform regular upgrades or enhancements to improve efficiency and performance. Participate in all phases of the software development life cycle. Participate in assigned projects to include, but not limited to, the migration of departmental sites and application systems. Perform quality assurance testing and debugging. Uphold University styles and best practices when creating content, writing for the web, and when using grammar, spelling, links, images and design
Security & Performance Develop strategies for ongoing improvement and optimization of website load speed and site performance. Uphold file compression techniques for improving website performance and user experience. Manage and maintain high-quality, secure, standards-compliant websites and digital experiences.
General Duties Support high-level University goals and initiatives related, but not limited, to Bucknell's communications and marketing strategy and admissions, alumni relations and fundraising goals. Develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with other members of the Digital Communications team, the Division of Communications and essential Library & Information Technology (L&IT) staff. Contribute to a work environment that encourages understanding of, respect for and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. Maintain, respect and protect the confidentiality of information held within, or transferred across, the University's computer and communication resources in any format. Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two years of directly related experience or, in lieu of education, six years of directly related work experience. Strong attention to detail; and demonstrated organizational, time-management and multi-tasking skills with the ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Expert knowledge in browser compatibilities issues; responsive and mobile-first design concept; and best practices in front-end design and implementation. Knowledgeable in front and back-end languages such as Javascript, HTML5, CSS3 and PHP. Local development experience using LAMP, MAMP or WAMP. Skill in creating, normalizing and securing databases using various database offerings. (MySQL, SQL, Oracle). Expert level knowledge of front-end development languages and ability to hand code HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Familiarity with Drupal 8 themes using Twig and custom module development. Knowledge and experience with cloud hosting services like Acquia and Pantheon. Knowledge of GIT or SVN code versioning systems. Mysql database backup and restoration into a local development environment. Ability to quickly learn new systems and software and demonstrate initiative to learn new skills and stay current in the profession. Experience in application development methodologies, including documenting data. flows, user workflows, understanding backend APIs, and building functional prototypes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, communications, or a related field and two years of related experience required. Knowledge of Drupal related command-line tools. (Drush) Experience utilizing ASP.NET or C#. Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with large enterprise-wide websites over 5000 pages. Experience with Drupal and Wordpress content management system. Experience writing for the web, search engine optimization, and search engine marketing. Experience with Google Analytics or a comparative analysis and reporting system. Experience managing, customizing and strategizing about social media/networking tools. Previous experience in higher education.
Work Type: This is a full-time, year round, benefits eligible position. This position will be considered for scheduling flexibility to work in a hybrid capacity based on staffing and business needs.

Salary Range: This is a Staff Exempt position with a hiring range of $63,800 - $79,750 (E10). The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
