Summary
Facilities Planning and Management at Iowa State University is seeking to hire a Mechanical or Civil Engineer. The position responsibilities include providing engineering services for utility distribution facilities with a focus on underground steam tunnels, steam and condensate distribution and chilled water distribution systems.â¯â¯ Work may occasionally also involve power plant systems such as pumps, heat exchangers, and chillers. Duties will include analyzing and troubleshooting utility systems and equipment; planning and managing utility projects; and coordinating contractors and design consultants with the ultimate goal of continuing to provide the University with highly reliable and efficient utility service.⯠There will be opportunities for cross training to work with domestic water, sewers, and natural gas.                                                                                                                                           Â
In addition, this position will be responsible for documenting distribution systems and design standards and providing support of mechanical distribution personnel.â¯â¯â¯The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills; strong organizational and analytical skills; and the ability to organize and coordinate work within and between projects. They must have the ability to understand complex utility systems and equipment.Â

Example of Duties ⢠Completes complex engineering projects. ⢠Performs project engineering work from design to implementation in accordance with the Universityâs policies. ⢠Serves as a consultant to others as assigned, providing technical information and engineering recommendations that assist with various projects and training purposes. ⢠May guide and train less experienced engineers.
Level Guidelines ⢠Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISUâs mission and department or work unit goals ⢠Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude ⢠Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action ⢠Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices ⢠Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff ⢠May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team) ⢠May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist ⢠Provides guidance to students
