Position Overview: | The UMBC Alumni Engagement & Development Team has an exciting opportunity for a Development Officer (DO). The DO will manage a portfolio of 80 -100 prospective, current and past donors, and will develop strategies for identification, qualification, solicitation and stewardship. |

Responsibilities: | The primary role of the Development Officer is to secure investment from generous donors for the institution's top priorities. The DO will be responsible for in-depth knowledge of giving opportunities in STEM schools, centers and offered by the institution as a whole. The DO will collaborate across schools and units where donors have multiple interests and giving priorities. The DO regularly reports on the major gift portfolio and activity to the Major Gift team, Deans, Department Chairs and other leaders. The DO may partner with other gift officers across the units to solicit funds for priority programs and initiatives. This position will focus on the College of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. |
Required Minimum Qualifications: | - Bachelor's Degree
- Proven major gift experience and success including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects/donors at the five- and six-figure range (2 years)
- Superior interpersonal and listening skills and the proven ability to collaborate as well as build strong working relationships with colleagues across the campus to achieve fundraising results
- Experience with complex multi-unit proposals and gifts requiring work with senior academic/program leaders (2 years)
- Facile with analyzing data, preparing reports/metrics and reporting on results (1 year)
- Experience working in a complex institution (example working across divisions and units) while maintaining professionalism, collegiality and collaboration (2 years)
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging through supporting institutional priorities and expressing workplace values for DEIB
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support
- Must be detailed, deadline oriented, goal oriented and comfortable managing multiple projects within tight schedules
- Comfort with technology and data management
- Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals

Preferred Qualifications: | - Master's Degree and/or Certification preferred (CFRE or Philanthropic Advisor)
- Experience raising funds from donors in a technical environment (engineering, science, research)
- Experience working with prospects/donors at the six- and/or seven-figure range
- Complex principal gift experience in a related field (major gifts, principal gifts, planned giving, higher education, nonprofit)
- Planned giving experience
- Proven principal gift experience managing prospects on behalf of senior institutional leaders
- Experience with higher education donors including alumni from Engineering, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts, Humanities, Student Life and other areas
- Experience with Athletic giving programs and donors
- Experience with multi-year campaigns, fundraising events and giving societies
- Experience working in higher education with academic and program leadership
- Experience with complex project management in support of development activity (complex proposals, major events, etc.)
- Volunteer management (or management in support of top institutional leaders) with major gifts, principal gifts and/or development committees (2 years)
