Job Overview
The Financial Operations Analyst is responsible for all matters of budget and financial analysis for a portfolio of academic departments and programs within the School of Foreign Service.
They work closely with the Associate Director of Finance and Operations on a number of critical tasks relating to the financial operations of the departments and programs for which they are responsible, including but not limited to annual budget development and analysis, monthly reconciliations, continuous and in-depth department and faculty support for all matters and inquiries related to finance and budget, monthly forecasting and analysis of revenue and expense trends, approval of all financial transactions in accordance with developed budget, and position budget/compensation analysis and review.
The Financial Operations Analyst provides operational and financial support by serving in the GMS Financials role of Cost Center Manager for a number of academic units within School of Foreign Service. They approve transactions and ensure compliance with promulgated university policies - as well as consistency with budget - for the following business processes: Requisitions, Expense Reports, ProCard allocations, Accounting Journals, Revenue Generating Agreements, and other relevant financial transactions.
They effectively communicate with, and provide solutions-oriented and high-quality service to, the stakeholders of the academic units in School of Foreign Service they serve. They proactively anticipate, and respond to, the needs of faculty, department chairs, and administrators; and through various means of communication (i.e., in-person meetings, email/phone), provide timely responses to inquiries, completing the research necessary to provide comprehensive responses consistent with university, SFS and departmental guidelines and strategy.
They are an expert on, and ensure compliance with, university, campus, and school policies, procedures, and best practices, and maintain a thorough understanding of the GMS Chart of Accounts fields, values, and how they interrelate.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to and working closely with the Associate Director of Finance and Operations, the Financial Operations Analyst works with members of the SFS Dean's Office staff on matters involving budget and financial planning and analysis, including the Associate Director of Finance and Operations, the Director of Faculty Affairs, the Director of HCM Operations and Administration, and the Senior Director of Finance.
They provide a broad range of customer service, operational, and financial support services to the various units within SFS and interact with many SFS programs and centers, employing excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with a wide range of constituents. These constituents include program directors, faculty, and administrators, the Provost's Office, the Office of Sponsored Research, Sponsored Projects Financial Operations, Accounts Payable, Payroll Services, General Accounting, Advancement, and University Financial Affairs.
As well, the Financial Operations Analyst interacts with various stakeholders from the SFS programs and centers on a daily basis via phone, email, in person, and/or instant messaging.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
5+ years of progressive work experience in financial analysis and budgeting - preference for experience in a university or non-profit environment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, or equivalent - for example, Google Apps with a mastery of Excel - vlookups, pivot tables, etc.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience communicating successfully with a diverse body of constituents
Strong orientation to details
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to interpret and apply university, campus, and school policies and procedures within a complex and diverse organization.
Ability to work independently, to self-regulate, and to implement time management strategies in order to manage multiple projects/responsibilities simultaneously and meet time-sensitive deadlines with little supervision
Familiarity with managing large volumes of data and database queries
Proficiency with Georgetown University systems - preference for Georgetown Management System (Workday)
