Job Overview
The Assistant Director, Student Leaders Program, manages - with the Georgetown MEPI Director - a U.S. State Department leadership and civic engagement project for university students from Middle East and North Africa (MENA region). In many cases, especially with the substantial communication, protocol, and relationship development in the MENA region, the Assistant Director acts in place of the Director as the main representative of Georgetown University CIED, in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
Manage planning and uniform implementation of complex domestic and overseas activities of the MEPI Student Leaders Program. This includes leading and overseeing the performance of sub-awardees and contractors including three partner host universities, several U.S. and MENA region strategic partners, and three Georgetown departments to ensure implementation of a cohesive program. Work in partnership with the three host institutions in the design-implementation of the U.S. academic summer exchange program and the yearly alumni conference held in the region. Responsibilities also include the development and implementation of an online participant orientation (including webinars) and the Washington, DC-based orientation and closing program activities for the 60 students. Responsible for designing and securing certain exchange program components such as professional site visits, civic engagement programming, advocacy visits, and social-cultural activities. As the team's primary regional-cultural expert designs new program elements based on State Department requests.
Develop support network of partners to support participant recruitment and alumni civic engagement in community development activities. Representing the Program Director and Georgetown University, spend significant time on outreach to overseas partners and potential partners. Creates social marketing/website content and maintains website and social networks to ensure successful promotion of the Program. Maintains the promotional materials up to date. Responsible for implementation (and subsequent reporting) of a complex mixed methods evaluation protocol requested by the State Department. Compiles documentation from the many sources, develops quarterly reports to the State Department. Provides Program Director and Director of CIED periodic written reports and briefings.
Work closely with the U.S. Department of State to ensure success in recruitment of participants. Responsible for close coordination with up to 17 U.S. Embassies overseas in managing confidential material required to secure U.S. visas. Responsible for handling sensitive and personal material in a confidential manner through secure systems.
Manage a Program Coordinator and a student assistant throughout the year (part-time during the school year and full-time in the summer). Manage up to three Resident Assistants for the Georgetown University summer in-bound program. Manage large program logistical projects related to health insurance and international and domestic travel. Oversee the processes of participant travel, insurance, and stipends.
Work Interactions
The role of this position is crucial to the effective functioning of the MEPI Student Leaders Program.
It is the nexus of all program communication and provides technical assistance and cultural guidance to partners. Serving in place of the Program Director, he/she they are responsible for managing three partner host universities and several U.S. strategic partnerships; managing the Georgetown University four-week exchange and providing strategic advice to Georgetown faculty and staff to ensure a successful implementation. They also keep the CIED website and promotional materials updated and relevant. It is essential to ensure that all tasks are completed in a timely and professional manner. Knowledge of the Middle East, flexibility, organization and clear communication are tantamount because complexity and attention to detail needed for this position cannot be underestimated.
Oversees multiple sub-awardees and contractors to ensure compliance with program guidelines, Georgetown University regulations, and USG super-circular requirements. Maintains on-going communication, serving as the primary contact at Georgetown, with sub-awardees and partners providing technical assistance and problem resolution.
The position reports to the Director of Georgetown SLP Program and supervises the graduate student intern and Resident Assistants. The position must interact with a range of contacts within Georgetown University and external CIED partners (foreign universities, government agencies, and members of the private sector and civil society). The position also deals with vendors and special events people for the special projects. The position, with the Director, makes recommendations for planning, management, and evaluation of CIED's administrative systems.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree - preference for Master's degree
At least two years' experience working with civil society programs and organizations in the MENA
Knowledge and experience in Middle East culture
Preferred requirements and qualifications
Exceptionally strong organizational and time management skills
Experience monitoring and ensuring compliance of sub-awardees and contractors
Outstanding interpersonal oral and written communications skills with ability to interact and network in a positive manner with a diverse clientele, including prominent social and political figures, and business executives
Competence in Arabic a plus but not a requirement
Demonstrated ability and effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
Excellent English writing and editing skills for the preparation of working and informational manuals, administrative reports, correspondence and program text
Ability to independently establish objectives, plan, direct, and evaluate all aspects of conference/special events
Skill in monitoring expenditures for programs
Ability to occasionally work extra hours nights and weekends (requires travel)
Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite software applications
