The Enterprise Library Systems Team in UITS encompasses a team-based work environment in which we develop and support all aspects of Indiana University Library Systems including the SirsiDynix Symphony Library Management System, the IU online Catalog (IUCAT), and the locally developed Bento-style library discovery tool.
Enterprise Solutions is seeking a collaborative professional Software Engineer with proven experience building well-architected applications and services. Library systems play a crucial role in the success of higher education institutions. Responsible for providing and implementing advanced software solutions for IU's Enterprise Library Management System and online library catalog discovery platform. Collaborates with stakeholders across the institution to implement best-in-class library solutions.
Directly influences and impacts the design and development of robust and reliable enterprise-scale Library applications and services supporting libraries on 8 IU campuses with collections totaling over 10 million titles.
Ensures that authorized users have the right access to IU library systems and facilitates the daily operations of IU Libraries while providing easy-to-use services for patrons to discover library collections and services.
Reports to the Manager, Enterprise Library Systems in the Enterprise Systems division of UITS.
Provides technical and coordination skills to define software engineering methodologies and standards.
Provides direction and guidance to the technical team on high priority software engineering projects/initiatives.
Researches and stays up to date on new industry software engineering standards, emerging technology, UX/UI design/philosophy, and accessibility standards.
Responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
Advises clients on critical decisions regarding information technology software solutions that will improve business efficiency.
Works collaboratively with other software engineering leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
Acts as a technical innovator and takes responsibility for designing advanced programmatic solutions and works with other developers on the team to resolve more complex technical issues.
Provides backend support, integration, and reporting support for the SirsiDynix Symphony Library Management System.
Provides backend and integration report for the IU online catalog, IUCAT, which includes support for the open source Blacklight application (Ruby on Rails, Solr).
Provides backend and integration support for IU's locally developed Bento-style library discovery tool, used on websites of multiple IU campuses
Leads technical team to deliver on University Libraries strategic objectives.
Stays up to date on evolving technologies, solutions and trends in enterprise library software and services.
Continuously improves and innovates on IU's library services capabilities to enhance the experience of IU students, faculty and staff while allowing IU libraries to effectively manage IU assets.
Provides advanced design, development, testing, and configuration of software systems and computer programs; performs advanced analysis, programming, troubleshooting, bug-fixing, and tuning of new and existing software.
Consults with stakeholders/clients to review existing software solutions; develops new functionality and/or writes new code as needed; advises clients on critical decisions regarding information technology software solutions that will improve business process efficiency.
Serves as a first point of escalation for diagnosis and resolution of complex technical problems arising from the deployment of software and computer programs.
Acts as a lead and takes responsibility for designing advanced programmatic solutions and work with other developers on the team to resolve more complex technical issues.
Ensures that all protocols used in the development and maintenance of software is up to date and compliant with university policies and standards; may participate in committees and communities of practice to share and improve software development practices across the university.
Provides advanced research/analysis and stays up-to-date on new industry software development standards, emerging technology, UX/UI design/philosophy, and accessibility standards.
Makes recommendations to improve, as well as implements, testing, quality assurance, and documentation protocols and procedures for websites and web applications; fixes complex bugs and resolves issues accordingly.
Lead contributor in project planning, formulating objectives, estimating tasks; performs studies to include feasibility, conceptual design, cost/benefit analysis, development and implementation planning.
May serve as project lead; often provides guidance to junior peers.
Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science, business systems, or related field)
Master's degree in computer science, information technology, business systems or related field.

5 years of software development experience in enterprise-scale applications and services in a large complex computing environment
Experience with library systems, particularly enterprise-scale integrated library systems (ILS) /library management systems (LMS) / library services platforms (LSP) in an academic setting

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. $82,000 - $92,000 annually
