Data Research Analyst, Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) -- Georgetown University
Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.
Data Research Analysts are part of CSET's data team, working with specific lines of research to produce data-driven research products and policy analysis alongside CSET's analysis teams. This dynamic role serves as a bridge between data and analysis teams and combines knowledge of research methods and data analysis skills. We encourage those with experience in common data visualization, programming languages, and/or statistical analysis tools to apply.
We are a cross-matrixed research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. CSET's research currently focuses on artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and biotechnology.
We are particularly interested in Data Research Analysts who could support one of the following lines of research:
Cyber/AI: Research areas include topics at the intersection of cyber defense and AI and the failure modes of ML, such as (but not limited to) analyzing how AI and ML techniques can improve cybersecurity; assessing the distribution and use of ML applications in cybersecurity; assessing how AI could alter future cyber operations or create new threats; or examining the potential failure modes of ML techniques. Ideal candidates have exposure to computer science, cybersecurity, or AI.
Biotechnology: Research may include examinations of the bioeconomy and global biosecurity. Projects span areas such as the biotechnology supply chain, infrastructure and funding, dual use research, safety regulations, international policies, and genomic data and editing. Ideal candidates include those with experience in biology, chemistry or laboratory work and/or exposure to genomics, bioinformatics, or related fields.
The Data Research Analyst will report to a Senior Fellow and will be responsible for:
Collaborating with Research Fellows, Research Analysts, Data Scientists, and Center leadership to develop and execute research proposals and produce data-driven analytic products within CSET's Lines of Research;
Supporting research through data-focused tasks, including but not limited to identifying and evaluating data sources, preparing datasets for analysis, applying appropriate methods to extract information from datasets, and conducting data/code reviews;
Developing data visualizations for use in presentations, reports, and interactive web visualizations;
Collaborating with CSET's Data Science team to identify data requirements, determine appropriate methods, foster cross-team communication, and effectively leverage CSET data resources;
Writing and contributing to CSET publications;
Communicating, in written and verbal formats, CSET's data resources and data-driven findings to a range of audiences, including contributing to DC briefings and events;
Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, biotechnology, and national security policy.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree;
3-5 years' relevant work experience required, including 2+ years of quantitative or statistical analysis experience from coursework or professional work and 1+ years of experience with SQL and Python and data visualization tools and/or packages from coursework or professional work;
Ability to process and analyze data sets, interpret them to derive conclusions, and present findings for a broad audience;
Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative team environment;
Effective communication skills, both oral and written, demonstrated through the development of publications and delivery of presentations;
Motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven.
