Position Summary
Arts & Sciences Computing is searching for an ambitious front-end developer to be an instrumental member of our team. In this position, you will be contributing to innovative research projects in need of intuitive and engaging design and UX for websites built on a variety of platforms, including Drupal, WordPress, and more.
This position will support impactful research projects that require custom design and UX solutions for sharing, presenting, or collecting research data, as well as the communication needs of academic departments and administrative websites.
The position is focused on web-based software development and data management in support of ongoing and new projects in these areas and beyond.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Interpret designs and wireframes to develop new themes, templates, features, and interactive websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This includes programming, testing, debugging, reviewing code, and documenting. The software developed will be leveraged across multiple departments and research groups and is expected to adhere to best practices in design, UX, version control, and testing.  Â
Collaborate with other Washington University departments and design partners to prototype, produce, and deliver engaging and accessible designs and interfaces.
Communicate and meet with internal clients to understand their projects, identify requirements, and work collaboratively to develop solutions on an agreed-upon timeline.
Research new web solutions based on business needs of Arts & Sciences, emerging trends, and best practices.
Help to support website content creators.
Preferred Qualifications
Exposure to the ctools plugin API, Drupal templates, theming, twig, and yml.
Experience developing for mobile platforms such as iOS and Android.
Familiarity with AWS, Linux/Apache, MacOS, and Windows.
Experience developing and testing for WCAG 2.0 AA web accessibility.
Prior experience in a higher education technology environment.
Experience working on an Agile team.
Contributions to open-source projects.
A growth mindset.
Experience with SCSS preprocessing.
Working knowledge of GIT or other version control systems.
Experience with UX and front-end design.
Experience employing standard practices regarding the application development lifecycle.
Strong understanding of web technologies, including HTML, SCSS, and JavaScript.
Ability to code in PHP, HTML, SCSS, and JavaScript.
Experience with AWS, Linux/Apache, MacOS, and Windows.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to web standards and professionalism.
Ability to prioritize and self-manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience with the use of business applications (email, calendar, spreadsheets, etc.).
Strong desire to develop new technical knowledge and professional skills on a continual basis.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with team members.
Ability to work flexible hours and recognize the need to do so.
Ability to adjust to change and demands on time.
Excellent communication with clients is a must. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effective oral and written communication. They are expected to maintain a positive working relationship with academic staff and other groups.
Required Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in related field or three years of experience in a web development role.
Strong understanding of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
Experience programming with PHP or similar Object Oriented server side language.
Experience with WordPress, Linux/Apache, MacOS.
Experience using a version control system like Git or SVN.

Salary Range
$50,500.00 - $86,200.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
