Job Overview
The Development Associate for Family Philanthropy plays a key role within the development team and Office of Advancement as a member of the Family Philanthropy team, focused on engaging, cultivating and securing philanthropic support from the Georgetown Parent community.
In a highly collaborative role, they work closely with two major gift officers (MGOs), whose portfolios have a particular focus on undergraduate parents. In that coordination, they provide a high level partnership across the Office of Advancement and Georgetown's broader community, uniquely working with colleagues in both central and unit development, donor relations, prospect research and strategy, stewardship, special events, the Office of the President, members Georgetown's executive leadership team, academic deans and faculty leaders, highly engaged and supportive parent donors and volunteers.
Among a myriad of duties, exposure and functions, the Development Associate leads or supports the Family Philanthropy team in: supporting portfolio review, maintenance, and strategy for two MGO portfolios; identifying and researching potential donors to the university, including an annual review of the undergraduate parent community; working closely with the Georgetown Parents Leadership Council and Student Life and Wellness Committee for the Board of Regents; supporting and executing high-level parent events, globally; liaising with the Office of Student Affairs; and creating a suite of parent evaluation, data and metrics annually to strategically grow the Family Philanthropy work.
As this role position matures and develops, there will be an opportunity to be part of the tactical growth of Georgetown's Generational Wealth strategy, and to carry a small portfolio of annual and major gift prospects identified within.
Notably, this particular role is designed to serve as a learning and training experience, structured to grow the talent of the Development Associate, preparing them to become a competitive candidate for development opportunities with high-end annual gift/low-end major gift portfolios.
Work Interactions
The Development Associate for Family Philanthropy is a uniquely positioned role within the Office of Advancement, for its synergistic responsibilities and cross-collaboration.
The Development Associate has core responsibilities for the day-to-day fulfillment of prospect research inquiries and requests in support of Georgetown University's fund-raising initiatives. They provide accurate, timely and comprehensive analysis and information about prospective donors to the University; engage in the identification and reporting of new prospective donors for placement in fundraiser portfolios; and work closely with two top university boards to provide strategic donor engagement.
They also administer the gift process for the Family Philanthropy team - entering and tracking asks, proposals, Gift Agreements/Statement of Intents, and gift transmittal forms.
The diversity of the Development Associate's workload requires teamwork, flexibility, efficiency, attention to detail, external relations, and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for a wide variety of assignments. As well, it requires tact, diplomacy and confidentiality in dealing with members of the University community and the University's donors.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
0-2 years of work experience - preference for a development/fundraising environment
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel
Broad knowledge of and experience in the use of research materials, including the internet and online informational databases
Ability to work efficiently and effectively, at times under tight deadlines
Strong problem solving abilities, and the ability to exercise independent judgment and imitative as appropriate
Attention to detail
An understanding and practice a high standard of confidentiality and ethical information collection.
Highly developed interpersonal, written and oral communications skills
Strong collaborative and project management skills; and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
