Summary Position Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Development Research, this position is responsible for researching, analyzing, and compiling information on current and prospective donors to Elon University. The Assistant Director uses their advanced querying, analytical, and critical thinking skills to collect and repackage data to inform philanthropic strategy for fundraisers, senior staff, and the University President.
- Uses advanced online databases, Internet resources, and in-house data to gather biographical and financial information, including: employment, stock holdings, compensation, inherited wealth, real estate, philanthropy, valuable collections, foundation assets, etc. - Analyzes and interprets information to create estimated gift capacity ratings - Creates and runs queries and exports in constituent database - Assists in maintaining accurate and up-to-date electronic records - Manages proactive alerts on high-level prospects and updates appropriate staff members with new information - Shares responsibility for creating event briefings, preparing research profiles, responding to requests, and generating leads through internal data mining - Works in collaboration with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations to prepare briefings- Acts as a liaison with the Assistant Director for Advancement Services - Reporting to segment constituents for special projects and proactive research- In the absence of the Senior Director, oversees operations of the Development Research office, and provides immediate support to university leadership- Works with the Senior Director to set departmental goals- Stays abreast of research methods and resources by attending training sessions and conferences- Other duties as needed or required Benefits of Working at Elon University

General Purpose of Position The Director of Development Research is responsible for implementing and managing donor/prospect research and tracking functions. The Director ensures that the universitys development professionals and senior staff have the information, analysis, and software necessary to fulfill their fund raising duties. Identifying, qualifying and profiling corporations, foundations and individuals are done for fund raising purposes and for other university business. Research performed is to be both proactive and reactive. The Director interacts and collaborates with University Advancement staff, other key university administrators, faculty, Alumni Relations, Parent Programs, and other university constituents. A computerized tracking operation ensures the university has an organized system to manage the assignment and strategies on all current and prospective donors and university VIPs. The research and tracking function places priority on major gift constituents, but recognizes the need to be central to all development activities at Elon.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Use public and proprietary sources to accurately and efficiently compile information from which outputs such as profiles, gift capacity ratings, and cultivation strategies are produced.
Perform quantitative analysis (including data mining) to identify potential donors and contribute to the development of fundraising strategies. Primary emphasis is on the major gift program.
Participate in development-related programs and strategies undertaken by the university in general and by schools and departments in particular. This position primarily serves as a liaison to the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
Facilitate CRM training for gift officers and support staff as related to prospect and donor data entry and usage.
Regularly attend Major Gifts strategy meetings.
