Job Overview
Support, maintain, monitor, and implement the university's enterprise data, voice, and wireless networks. Work with senior members of the network operations staff to provide incident support, fulfill customer requests and participate in the deployment of network hardware and configurations as part of the department's ongoing initiatives.
Essential Functions
Support and deploy networking technology, including LAN/WAN (wired switches and routers), WLAN (wireless access points and controllers), network security (VPN, firewalls, and authentication systems), network support (DNS/DHCP, network management), and telephony (VoIP) services; specific duties will vary according to the life cycle and the technical complexity of the network and associated hardware and software.
Configure, maintain and manage enterprise network devices; travel throughout the university's campuses and to other remote facilities as necessary.
Monitor network traffic, utilization and performance; test and evaluate network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
Work with clients, technical staff and vendors on service request fulfillment, network implementation, optimization, and ongoing management.
Troubleshoot system failures escalating to senior technicians or vendors as appropriate; monitor incoming incident reports and work with other departments and end users to resolve problems.
Participate in an after-hours Tier 2 on-call rotation responding to network outage emergencies as defined in the department's standard operating procedures; serves as the initial emergency escalation contact for Tier 1 (help desk) support.
Develop and maintain documentation for network systems to be used by other engineers or the university community.
Ensure the security of the university's network by implementing the policies and practices that prevent and monitor unauthorized access, misuse or denial of service to a computer or other network-accessible resources.
Serve as a competent professional sharing attained knowledge with peers.

Required Education
Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field.
Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Trainings/Certifications
Valid driver's license with an acceptable record.
Required Experience
Two (2) years of intermediate to advanced level experience working with networking hardware and software including network design and implementation.
Possess a thorough understanding of commonly used networking concepts, practices, and procedures.
Additional Qualifications Considered
Associate level (CCNA, CWNA) or higher industry certification (can be substituted for experience).
