MaineHealth is seeking an experienced and collaborative healthcare executive to serve as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland, a vibrant 740-bed flagship academic hospital with a strong reputation and history of delivering high quality healthcare services.
The COO of MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland reports directly to the President of MaineHealth’s Southern Region and leads and develops a talented team in day-to-day operations, budget development and implementation, financial performance and quality performance and is responsible for executing the strategic direction of the system and Southern Region at Maine Medical Center Portland. The COO works closely with system leaders, service line leaders, peers on the Maine Medical Center leadership team, and with their team to drive operational excellence.
The COO will approach this role as a business leader aligning the work of all care teams to the interests of patients and payers, while building on Maine Medical Center Portland’s strengths. The COO will add considerable value to the hospital and system’s success by operationalizing solutions that address current and emerging challenges in delivering high quality care in a sustainable way and ensuring Maine Medical Center Portland’s strong operational and fiscal performance.
The COO will be a visible and engaged leader on campus and within the broader community and will support the MaineHealth vision “Working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.” The ideal candidate will bring qualities that demonstrate affinity and alignment with MaineHealth’s core values and guide all initiatives and interactions.
Five years of management experience in a C-Level role for a 400+ bed acute care medical center or health center. Previous tertiary hospital and health system experience.
Held previous role(s) similar to COO, Vice President of Operations, system-wide service line leader, clinical services leader, or clinical services support leader.
Experience partnering with a mixed model medical staff.
Familiarity in a teaching hospital environment.
Accustomed to working in a highly matrixed environment.
Strong financial acumen and experience managing complex budgets.
Excellent values-based communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Demonstrated ability to manage change and drive continuous improvement.
