The School of Social Ecology has marshaled its interdisciplinary expertise to focus on areas including global environmental degradation, poverty and other forms of inequality, prison overcrowding and gang violence in California, healthy child development, challenges faced by an aging population, health risks and community empowerment. These efforts have made the School of Social Ecology a national leader in applying basic theory and empirical research to a range of complex societal problems. The School of Social Ecology's Contracts and Grants Unit provides quality assistance to faculty, researchers, and other academic personnel affiliated with the school to obtain (pre-award) and manage (post-award) sponsored awards, including but not limited to federal grant programs, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), that support research, training, and other scholarly activities. The Contracts and Grants Unit staff ensures timely, accurate, and responsible stewardship of funds by carrying out these administrative activities within UC, UCI, Federal, State, and agency policies, procedures, and regulations.

The staff assists with the submission of contract and grant proposals from all prospective sponsors including but not limited to the Federal Government, Private Foundations, and For-Profit Entities. The staff also monitors and reports on funds received from outside sponsors and internal UCI sources and provides general guidance on the proper stewardship of those funds.

Your Role on the Team

The Principal Contract & Grant Analyst is pivotal in utilizing advanced contracts and grants concepts to effectively manage high-volume and high-complexity transactions. They provide crucial support to faculty, researchers, and other academic personnel associated with the school, facilitating their proposal submissions.

Their role is central to reviewing and guiding others in reviewing the financial and administrative management requirements of research contract and grant proposals, including but not limited to federal grant programs, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), ensuring compliance with institutional and sponsor policies. Operating independently, they assess complex grant, contract, and subcontract transactions, conducting thorough evaluations of variable factors.

Moreover, they are tasked with guiding and training less experienced staff while serving as a dependable resource for faculty members.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $$85,400- $$121,100 (Annual).

Required:

• Extensive knowledge of program administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
• Advanced knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
• Ability to manage high volume and complex transactions.
• Ability to perform highly complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
• Demonstrated advanced competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
• Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
• Maintains knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply sponsor, institutional and departmental policies. Knowledge of current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
• Experience with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements.
• Full knowledge of Federal Acquisition Regulation, Code of Federal Regulations, sponsor-specific policies, intellectual property policy, conflict of interest requirements, publication rights, application of indirect cost rates and other complex concepts in research administration.
• Ability to interpret policy for others.
• Advanced knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures and techniques
• Advanced ability to create and train grant writing and other communications skills in a variety of styles to ensure securing grant funding required.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Preferred:

• Proficient in the use of UC Campus and agency systems, such as Kuali Research, Cayuse, NSF Research.gov, and NIJ JustGrants
• Demonstrated skill in understanding and interpreting University of California Policies and Procedures as they relate to finance, contracts and grants, and sales and services activities.
• Demonstrated skill in understanding and interpreting current federal, state and University regulations relating to contracts and grants administration to include OMB Circular A-21 and CASB applications.
• Demonstrated organizational skills with a strong attention to detail and ability to recognize the workload of others faced with a heavy workload and competing deadlines and ability to temporarily reassign tasks to meet deadlines.
