Responsibilities: | The Data Analyst and Machine Learning Specialist's role is to conduct, interpret, and present results that support UMBC’s mission, strategic goals, and the recommendations of our accreditation Self Study and to assist with the effective use of tools (both internally developed and vendor provided) to support the continuous improvement of the university.
Using standard analytical tools and vendor-provided systems, the person holding this position will help to support campus stakeholders with development and assessment of our student success initiatives. They will support and conduct projects that increase enrollment, graduation and retention rates, reduce time to degree, support improved academic advising, and improve student learning and course performance.
This person holding this position will help to improve our ability to assess the outcomes of strategic planning and strategic enrollment planning decisions by supporting the presentation and visualization of analytical results and business intelligence dashboards (often using Tableau) that monitor strategic goals and key performance indicators.
Responsibilities: - Support the implementation, training, and effective use of vendor-provided and internally-built analytics systems by campus stakeholders. This includes effectively using analytics products and platforms to deliver information that stakeholders can understand and act upon through basic (e.g., tables and charts) and more advanced analytics (e.g., interactive dashboards, and the assessment of, development, and deployment of predictive models).
- Work with campus stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and conduct analytical projects that support the university’s mission, goals, strategic plan, and strategic enrollment plan.
- Use appropriate data and methods to uncover fact patterns and perform basic and intermediate statistical inference.
- Curate and present real-time or intervention/action-based data from our systems (e.g., the LMS, card swipes, PeopleSoft, Sales Force, Webassign, Vital Source, etc.) in new ways that allow us to tackle new problems or re-imagine solutions to existing ones.
- Prepare high-quality and clear written reports, exhibits, and visualizations that present and interpret findings.
- Support and assess our student experience initiatives. This includes, for example, supporting committees charged with student success and persistence, use data and analysis to support the development and assessment of our student advising, case management, nudging, first-year alert program and other activities (at the class, department, college, or university level) designed to help student success, improve retention, improve graduation rates, and shorten time to degree.
- Mentor Undergraduate and Graduate Research Assistants in their work supporting the above initiatives.

Required Minimum Qualifications: | - Requires a bachelor's degree in economics, mathematics/statistics, computer science or other fields with related analytical competencies.
- 2 years experience in analytics and machine learning modeling.
- 2 years experience in data warehouse report creation and data extraction using SQL.
- 2 years programming experience in Python, R, Julia, and HTML/CSS/Javascript.

Preferred Qualifications: | - Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science and Engineering, or Mathematics preferred.
- 4 years experience with AI/ML modeling. Experience with Tableau dashboard creation.
- Candidates pursuing or holding doctorates will receive strong consideration.
- Experience with HelioCampus data warehouse and Tableau reporting.

Salary: | Salary: $62,500 - $71,500 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. |
