The Lead Network Engineer position is a dual role where the candidate will be responsible for supporting the Research Network and High-Performance Computing infrastructure and assist the Core Engineering Team in the configuration and maintenance of the UIC academic IP network.
This position will work in a multidisciplinary collaborative environment as a member of the academic Network Core Team as well as provide primary support to our Advanced Cyber Infrastructure for Education and Research (ACER) group. This candidate will participate in multi-vendor management, security, and network protocols for the research network environment and the academic network. The candidate must have knowledge of TCP/IP, large flows of data, Science DMZ, HPC networking and have hands-on network experience with installation, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of switches, firewalls, and routers in a research network environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Implement, configure, support, and maintain campus ISP connections, WAN and LAN routers, firewalls, and switches on the academic network.
Implement, configure, support, and maintain internal HPC networks (high-end networking) and external connectivity to Internet and Internet2.
Monitor research network and academic network usage and system performance.
Provide support to various special network projects and end users. Act as the technical liaison for campus researchers with the ACER group.
Update documentation, specifications, and network standards. Evaluate new and emerging technologies. Manage day-to-day duties including support clients on edge networks by completing timely service calls and implementing approved daily network changes to switches and routers.
Other duties as assigned. Responsible for completion of daily tasks and project requests in a timely matter, as well as completing atypical assignments. Expected to participate in emergency service calls and network technical projects.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study.
Minimum 5 years of professional IT experience within Infrastructure & Networking Engineering which includes demonstrated experience in planning, building/implementation of communication Networks (LAN/WAN/VPN) that support high performance voice, data, video and wireless network services.
Preferred Qualifications:
Specialized training for Juniper switches, Palo Alto firewalls, and Cisco routers.
Hands-on experience with HPC networks and topologies (e.g. Inifiniband Fat-Tree, Cray Dragonfly).
Experience with underlying technologies in a Science DMZ.
Demonstrated knowledge of the OSI model. Must have hands-on network experience in a large network environment.
Knowledge of OpenFlow, Zeek or similar platforms.
Must be able to answer email in a timely manner, effectively use Microsoft Office Suite, and Microsoft Visio. Be able to provide quick response to ticket tracking system.
