The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington is a global leader in data-driven public health research, and has led the charge for science-based decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic, including support for increased public safety measures. IHME funds its work in part through a social enterprise – IHME Client Services – that licenses access to IHME’s data to support IHME’s work.
IHME Client Services is seeking candidates for a Senior Analyst to generate Population Health Intelligence. In this role, you would help us expand the audience for IHME data across a wide range of sectors, including philanthropy, insurance, technology, financial services, and life sciences. Using software engineering and statistical skills, the Senior Analyst will expand our product portfolio to include data and tools that connect directly to the specific needs of organizations that are leveraging population health data for cutting-edge work in these sectors.
This role can be fully remote with travel, barring travel restrictions, to Seattle and to client offices worldwide.

This is a one-year renewable contract, where the incumbent may earn a yearly incentive bonus based upon CSU incentive targets being achieved during the plan year.
•Become familiar with IHME’s software, analytic code, and research work to understand the underlying machinery and research principles within several key programs of work at IHME. These may include but are not necessarily limited to the Global Burden of Disease, microsimulation, future health scenarios, disease expenditure, and clinical informatics. •Understand client needs and determine how best to match them against IHME’s internal competencies and expertise.
Software development and analytic strategy
•Lead analytic strategy for answering client requests. •Assemble and lead research teams as necessary, including staff from both within and without IHME Client Services. •Direct other staff, as needed, in: odata extraction, formatting, and transformation. oconstruction and maintenance of databases containing health data from multiple sources. odocumenting, testing, and performing source control while following best practices. •Perform quality assurance and routine diagnostics on data and databases. •Develop and implement statistical/machine learning models for a range of tasks, including but not limited to: oforecasting of health outcomes such as mortality, incidence, prevalence, risk exposure, etc. obreaking down diseases and other health inputs into finer levels of granularity. opredicting optimal pricing of data bundles. •Contribute to software specification processes and present to users for feedback. •Design and develop high-quality, reusable, reliable software in support of modeling and other tasks. •Create intuitive data visualizations and user interfaces for results of analyses. •Help determine appropriate tools to use, including languages, frameworks, data structures, etc. •Assess databases that house the relevant data and determine how best to use them.
Client support and deliverable production
•Coordinate CSU project work streams in problem solving and developing project deliverables, both from IHME headquarters in Seattle as well as client sites in the US and abroad. •Directly generate or oversee the production of technical documentation, summaries of data searches, and training presentations. •Guide and support the development of training programs related to IHME’s products and research areas for technical staff in private-sector organizations.
•Communicate clearly and effectively while contributing as a productive team member. •Work closely with other team members to help them with relevant tasks, show them new skills, and help resolve emerging problems on different projects. •Exercise strong independent judgment in executing the responsibilities contained herein, assessing information at hand and conferring with other key stakeholders. •Perform additional duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of this position as member of the team.
•Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, economics, or other quantitative field, plus five years’ related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
•Demonstrated expertise in statistics, computer science, or software development. •Experience and interest in scientific software development in R and Python. •Facility with analytic tasks and ability to participate productively in interdisciplinary teams. •Strong sense of focus and attention to detail. •Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, managing multiple priorities to deadlines. •Demonstrated organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work in a highly creative, entrepreneurial environment. •Fluency in English is essential. Working knowledge of an additional language is desirable.
•Quantitative PhD with an emphasis on statistical and computational methods.
•This role requires travel up to 10% of the year, including international travel. As such, the candidate must have a valid passport or the ability to obtain passport. •All Client Services staff work under annual contracts, which are renewed based on performance. Under these contracts, staff may earn a yearly incentive bonus based upon revenue targets being achieved during the year. •IHME Client Services is headquartered in Seattle, but team members are free to work remotely anywhere in the United States as long as their working hours can reasonably overlap with others on the team. •All team meetings are conducted virtually. •We are committed to social service and encourage staff to volunteer their time to causes of interest to them. •We provide funds for each team member‘s ongoing professional development
