Chief Executive Officer
International Association of Better Business Bureaus (IABBB)
Application
Details
Posted: 20-Jun-25
Location: Remote
Type: Full Time
Salary: $475K – $525K
Internal Number: 3128
In a digital world clouded by misinformation and anonymous reviews, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) stands out as a trusted, independent voice for both consumers and businesses. With over 200 million annual visits to BBB.org and more than 35 API partners (and growing), BBB is already one of the most widely utilized sources of trust data online.
At the center of this system is the International Association of Better Business Bureaus (IABBB), the strategic and operational hub connecting 90 local BBBs supporting over 360,000 Accredited Businesses across the U.S. and Canada. IABBB is now poised for its next chapter—leveraging artificial intelligence and data innovation to reimagine how trust is built, verified, and scaled in the digital economy. This is a unique opportunity to elevate a 100+ year-old brand into a leading AI-driven trust platform for consumers and small businesses—the economic backbone of North America.
As IABBB’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will lead the transformation of the organization, elevating the BBB brand to meet the expectations of new generations, building upon the foundation as a trusted, ethical standards-based organization, and increasing the brand’s relevance to businesses and consumers across all industries and demographics.
You will lead a seven-person executive team with a fully remote staff of 73 across finance and operations, knowledge and program development, legal, marketing and communications, and technology. The association has a $15 million budget and supports a BBB network with a combined budget of $260 million. Working in close partnership with the IABBB Board of Directors and local BBB leadership, you will guide the organization’s strategic direction, improve collaboration and innovation across the network, and ensure IABBB offers high-impact services that can be tailored to fit BBBs of different sizes and needs. You will also expand the business model with scalable revenue streams, build alliances that raise IABBB’s visibility, and position the organization as a thought leader on small business resilience and ethical practices.
IABBB is committed to a mission startup focus under the lead of a dynamic CEO to improve how it publishes and delivers data on 5.8 million businesses, the core product behind the BBB brand. This data is the foundation of everything BBBs do to help businesses become better businesses, and guide consumers through important buying decisions.
How You’ll Make an Impact: Key Focus Areas
In alphabetical order:
AI Strategy and Technology. Lead IABBB’s investigation and adoption of AI and emerging technologies to support internal efficiency, improve user experience on BBB.org, and elevate service delivery. Ensure BBB data is visible in AI-powered search. Drive the development of programs to help businesses navigate ethical AI adoption.
BBB Network Alignment. Strengthen cohesion across a complex federated model, ensuring that the North American IABBB strategy aligns with local BBB operations and balancing local autonomy with system-wide consistency. Promote a shared service model for BBBs to collaborate and promote business growth. Create systems to scale successful local BBB innovation on a network level.
Board Governance. Engage with the boards of IABBB, Interactive Blue, and the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust to ensure alignment on strategic direction, financial stewardship, and organizational priorities. Support effective board decision-making by anticipating emerging issues and providing clear analysis, context, and recommendations.
Financial Stewardship and Business Model Expansion. Strengthen IABBB’s finances by carefully evaluating all aspects of the business model. Lead the development of scalable revenue streams that reduce reliance on BBB Accredited Business dues, including opportunities to monetize extensive business data through partnerships and products.
Rating System Modernization. Evaluate and evolve BBB’s core rating system to drive the future of the organization, ensuring it remains credible, relevant, easily understood, and valuable for both businesses and consumers. Identify critical gaps and align the system with modern expectations around transparency, accountability, and performance.
Strategic Partnerships. Explore financially beneficial partnerships with mission-aligned organizations to strengthen IABBB’s reach, support local BBBs, and broaden engagement with the business community. This includes both growing existing partnerships and developing new ones in local communities as well as with national and international organizations, leading online websites, associations, businesses, and nonprofits that share a role in building marketplace trust.
Team Leadership. Foster a collaborative culture that supports innovation, accountability, and professional growth. Ensure IABBB staff are aligned with strategic goals and have the structure and resources needed to thrive in a remote environment.
Thought Leadership and Brand Awareness. Partner with media, policy leaders, and others to position IABBB as a credible authority on trust and elevate the organization’s voice in public discourse. Use proprietary data, consumer insights, and real-world case studies to drive narratives around fraud prevention, digital ethics, and transparent business practices.
Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits
You’ll enjoy a fully remote work environment with travel as needed to meet with stakeholders, partners, and local BBBs. Candidates may reside in any U.S. state, excluding California, Hawaii, and U.S. Territories. You must be a legal U.S. citizen.
The budgeted total cash compensation range for this position is $475K – $525K with an outstanding benefits package including generous PTO with 12 paid holidays, options for medical, dental, and vision coverage with FSA or HSA, 401(k) with 4% employer match, and Life, AD&D, and short and long-term disability insurance.
Qualifications
Proven experience in the following areas:
15–20 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably with a minimum of 5 years as the CEO or senior leader of a nonprofit, corporation, membership/chapter-based organization, or an organization with a federated model. Deep understanding of nonprofit governance and board partnership is preferred.
Expanding into new markets and building revenue streams through innovation and partnerships. Marketing expertise (segmentation, SEO, brand management), including selling digital/data products, is a strong plus.
Serving as an external ambassador for an organization, including media representation and public speaking. Ability to develop strategic alliances and thought leadership to expand influence, visibility, and impact.
Leading budgeting, revenue growth, cost control, and investment strategies. Comfortable using data to drive decisions and measure impact.
Leading teams of 50+ hybrid or remote staff through layers of management with an emphasis on building culture, driving accountability, inspiring innovation, and managing change.
Strong understanding of how technology and data can drive operational efficiency, improve customer experience, and support strategic decision-making. Overseeing or collaborating with large IT teams, especially in digital product development or infrastructure modernization.
